I am delighted to join my colleagues in Cambridge at the @realcentre.bsky.social next week to share my work on the political economy of refugee education. UK folks, it would be lovely to see you in person at the seminar! See below for details (in-person and online).

With less than 1 week until the TX primaries, here are some photos of me and @jamestalarico.bsky.social from the archives. If you've wondered whether his amazing interviews (Colbert!!) are just political speak: I can confidently say that he is the real deal and is worthy of your trust and support 🀘

ONLINE tomorrow: @guygrossman.bsky.social will present our new paper on the effects aid cuts for refugees. We follow 5400 households over 2 years and leverage a regression discontinuity design in Uganda. We find that self-reliance policies are not enough to mitigate the negative impact of cuts.

At #SPSA2026 in New Orleans this week? Come to my favorite event of the year: the 6th Annual Borders and Migration workshop. Six panels on Thursday/Friday with great scholars and lots of feedback, plus an author-meets-critics on my book "In Our Interest" with some real heated takes.

1. Look, there are basically just two ways to run the global oil market: petro-imperialism and petro-consumerism. Historically USA has embraced both, varying over time. The attack on #Venezuela is a return to naked petro-imperialism. Thread.

I’m a scholar of gun violence. Not even I can process what happened at Brown. - The Boston Globe My typical response to school shootings is to call for policy changes. But I’m afraid the task ahead is bigger than that.

"Trauma is a shape-shifter." Two necessary pieces on feeling, managing, writing about the impossible and impossibly regular gun violence. Fr Brown anthropologist of gun violence @ievajusionyte.bsky.social about culture, not just policy. But policy too. 1/ www.bostonglobe.com/2025/12/17/o...

The Providence and Brown communities are some of the strongest I know and have already come together in amazing ways in the face of this unimaginable tragedy. Take care of each other, friends πŸ’”

were the first to notify multiple non-affiliated friends who live on streets that border Brown’s campus. In one case, a friends 13-year old son had just walked to campus down the street the shooter fled with friends and they had no way of being notified despite their close proximity to campus.

One lesson we learned through this experience: For universities like Brown that are in the middle of residential areas, it is critical to include the wider community in campus alerts immediately if there is an active shooter on campus. It’s enraging that the question of a mass shooting touching my community has increasingly felt like a question of β€˜when’ not β€˜if’. Last night it happened at Brown where my husband is a PhD student in a building he was in just two days before in a neighborhood we lived in for the past 5 years.

Thanks to @harvardcid.bsky.social for highlighting our World Development article on the politics of refugee integration. We argue that refugee education diverges from standard political economy frameworks applied to citizen populations and propose a conceptual framework reflecting unique featuresπŸ‘‡

This hits close to home. Six of those killed, including 2 teens, were part of the skating community here in Boston. I first met Vadim and Evgenia in 2004. It was a joy to watch them coach their son Max to the world stage over the years. My heart goes out to the families and entire skating community.
