Hoping your 2025 is winding down well!
This is my plan for the end of the year
Counterpoint: George Lucas kept changing Star Wars decades after the movie was released.
For me, I hate to sit there silently trying to remember where such and such tab was. I still like bookmarks. I keep a file with bookmarks
Iβm old.
Iβm so sorry
It is with sadness that I report that Iβve become one of those βlots of tabs open in my browserβ people
Well then youβre in for a treat honestly. Wonβt spoil it though.
Turns out Ares lost $135M :-(
I still liked it though. No time for the haters!
The new "Tron: Ares" movie is surprisingly good. Saw it in the theater because I read that the visuals were good, but the story was really great too. I was pleasantly surprised.
I really prefer reading physical printouts of papers, so I normally just write in the margins. If I'm reviewing or doing a deep dive into a paper, I just open a blank document on my computer and jot notes there.
βAllow Solitaire.exe to find and locate devices on this network?β
Sure, why not.
And lectures on cable tv. And courses by mail. Courses over the radioβ¦
Information has been widely available in books for centuries. Professors arenβt a replacement for books, and so this analysis of AIβs role for higher education is flawed

An academia email asking if I wrote an article in 1989
Iβm not, but I wish I was! An article like this would have been a real accomplishment for a 10 year old.
I think my biggest accomplishment that year was probably beating Zelda 2 on the NES if I recall correctly.

A flyer for a pumpkin beer festival with 60 beers on tap
There is a Pumpkin Beer festival in Seattle, featuring 60 pumpkin beers on tap. That is a shocking variety of pumpkin beers! ππΊππΊ
I'd like a 40% stake in this business in exchange for buying you two (2) beers the next time we hang out. Do we have a deal?
Very proud of my student Amanda Tomlinson, who just successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation: "Leveraging the Variability of Computing Resources and Renewable Energy to Lower the Carbon Footprint of Computing." Congrats Amanda!
Wait I misunderstood the original comment. I thought you were talking about cooling, not fire suppression. The liquid cooling is tap water, not some exotic 3M refrigerant.
Regarding the fire suppression, I have no idea. Probably water because I don't recall any Halon signs.
Fire Fighters entering a secure facility, you say?
I recall Microsoft working with 3M(?) to develop some pretty exotic liquids for liquid cooling their datacenters.
No. It's not a very big space and there are now O(100) faculty in UCSD CSE. I believe there is going to be a recharge type situation for renting the space/power/cooling.
tap water (apparently... I asked twice to make sure)
me in the new CSE datacenter, wearing a high-viz vest and hardhat
I got to see the new UCSD CSE machine room. The approach to cooling is dramatically different than the older machine room, with a focus on in-rack heat exchanging into liquid which is pumped out of the room. It's pretty neat, and quite impressive!
