I was about 10, and it was blindingly obvious to me that the idea of a powerful deity that was supposed to be good was preposterous for many obvious reasons. It still is, and I've never looked back.

Exciting announcement! My new department is launching a postdoc fellowship in quantitative biology. Fellows will be co-advised by two Bio faculty, one that is quant focused (not me) and one that is not (me???). I would love to co-sponsor a postdoc and build a collaboration so please reach out!
I donβt use X any more, but a while back I posted a thread on my good fortune to work with David, which captures how he could give people opportunities and let them run with them

However, more than that, he was an incredible mentor, training dozens of grad students and postdocs, many of whom went on to train another generation of scientists. His impact will continue to be felt for decades to come. I miss him, and his memory is a blessing. 2/
I was sad to learn that my postdoctoral mentor, David Botstein, died yesterday. I started with David as a postdoc in 1998, and he had a profound effect on both my life and scientific career. He was a giant in the field of genetics, making seminal contributions in both yeast and human genetics. 1/
