I actually got the chance to do a massive infodump on VC over what the V-Pet craze and PokeMania were like to people who weren't there for it and while it was awesome to explain it also made me feel old AF like this 💀

I am still hella iffy on Palworld but whether or not the clearly ripped off aspects or used GenAl, there was at least SOME effort to change a few designs up? It needed work but still.

Man my ass did not grow up with the stance that you can love Pokemon, Digimon, YGO, and multiple members of the same genre just for it to devolve to "who can copy the big cheese the best"

Sorry I've just already been in a huge creature collector mood lately, seeing this is just so sad to me.

As someone who just loves the genre in general, it just hurts to watch... :c

There are so many creative and interesting ways to expand on creature collectors. Sure, there is inevitable overlap in places, but there's overlap and then there's... this.

Not content to just steal from the real deal, this game is also ripping off fan designs 😬

The good ones absolutely exist but I hate how fans of the genre continue to give all of the wrong attention to those just doing the same stuff.

There is good out there! The genre deserves better!

If you wanna be the next cool creature collector, find what you can do differently while scratching that itch of badass monster companionship. Beastieball focused on that with its sports angle. SMT/Persona embraced its bizarre, freakish mythology angle.

FIND YOUR NICHE!!!!

I think so many creature collectors fight so hard to brand themselves as "Pokemon but better" that there's no unique identity to latch onto. Copying the cool kid has never worked, not in the long-term anyway.

It gets you five minutes of fame, not a lasting impact.

Digimon didn't become what many argue is Pokemon's greatest rival by copying it. They didn't make new rodent mascot. They said "Hey let's rebrand Tamagatchis with nuke-launching dinosaurs" and it WORKED!!

MonHun made a monster-slaying game and said "alright but what if they were FRIENDS".

Casual reminder that Pokemon Red and Green were in development hell for SIX YEARS. For a little itty bitty Game Boy RPG! Because the creature aspect was huge and BOY was their payoff worth it in the end!

This genre can be so much more. Stop trying to make "Pokemon but better" and make something NEW

Yokai Watch kinda flew too close to the sun and exhausted people with franchise fatigue and poor Western marketing.

Just... Man I wanna see the genre do better because they can be so much more than clones of the top dog. Creature collectors require a lot of investment but it can 1000% be worth it.

Stop trying to make the next Charizard or Pikachu. Stop trying to make the next Lucario. Come up with better twists beyond "we gave them guns!"

Digimon and MonHun Stories do this really well. PazuDora sadly doesn't do more than stick on mobile lately. Beyblade and YGO are... there.

The most I will say about the new trending monster topic is man, I wish creature collectors were trying harder. Or at least the ones that do try got more love and attention.
