Yes and yes, though I am pondering getting one of these (review from @rhodri.biz)
I think we both know the answer to that
Well indeed - and add in the accountancy apprenticeships and it seems like overkill www.aat.org.uk/apprenticesh...
By far the better approach
It appears thereβs going to be a V level in Finance & Accounting to run alongside the existing A level in Accounting - but which is best? educationhub.blog.gov.uk/2026/03/new-...

Not like this
This is such a retrograde step. With all the gaming of the past, and the dearth of arts and languages at GCSE and A Level, why can people not see the net effect will be less maths overall, as fewer students do the double subject. It's not a linked-pair pilot!
Replacing Maths to 18 with Maths to 14
Oh no, not this again

From 2022 onwards students have been given formulae sheets
GCSE Mathematics:
From 1988-2002 students were given formulae sheets
From 2003-2007 students were given formulae sheets
From 2008-2011 students were given formulae sheets
From 2012-2016 students were given formulae sheets
From 2017-2019 students werenβt given formulae sheets
Theres always a consultation www.gov.uk/government/c...
Itβs all different on the continent
Iβd agree; you donβt really want to see students (who, for example, know how and when the cosine rule should be applied) being penalised in an exam just because theyβve frozen under exam conditions or misremembered a term or two
Maybe something in that, memorising formulas is something that needs practice and effort.
Exam boards will be damned either way, though - exams are often derided for being βjust a test of memoryβ except when theyβre not; then theyβre just dumbed down because students donβt have to remember anything
Surprised to see the issue of remembering maths formulas is exercising so many people who donβt have to remember maths formulas
If only we could have predicted that formulae sheets for GCSE would continue to be used for ever
The road to digital GCSE exams will be littered with mishaps (IT and otherwise) so why not start now, start small, get the early adopters onside, see what happens. But run regular exams at the same time - donβt tear up the railways just because you think roads are the future
Ofqual would need four meetings and a public consultation before getting out of the way of a moving train tbh www.tes.com/magazine/new...
Help move towards parity by re-badging some A levels as V levels: eg Accounting, Business Studies, Digital Technology, Health & Social Care, Law, Media Studies, Psychology and no doubt a few more
The rules for maths say it always has to be Charlie Stripp
Modular exams - still popular where you can get them www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
I agree, but we need an A level that isnβt aimed at A/A* students. Just over 40% will give you a C grade, but I can imagine you might not feel equipped for a degree with that (especially compared to other subjects). If thereβs a need to discriminate at the top end, thatβs what Further Maths is for!
