In the case of human beings, the concept of feather adornments is conceptually similar to clothing. Featherwork is a vital element in many rituals.
The Waura tribe has characteristic headdresses, often made of feathers of parrots or other colourful birds such as macaws. In this particular case, they make use of the colours yellow and orange in a skillful way that only true artists could achieve.
Waura artisans collect feathers from vibrant Amazonian birds such as macaws, toucans, parrots, and hummingbirds. These are meticulously cleaned, dyed with natural pigments (e.g., from genipap fruit for black or urucu seeds for red), and woven or attached using cotton threads or plant fibers.
Feathers are integral to Waura body adornment, serving not just as decorative elements but as embodiments of aesthetic ideals, social status, and ritual efficacy. Adornment is a daily and ceremonial practice for the Waura, transforming the body into a canvas of joy, identity, and cosmic connection.
The Waura, also known as the Wauja, are an indigenous Arawak-speaking people residing in the Upper Xingu region of the Amazon rainforest in Mato Grosso, Brazil. Feathers are integral to the Waura body adornment. Elaborate feather crowns or headbands are worn by men during dances and rituals.
