There being no credits for No. 29 when all past interludes have had at least a producer credit is a mystery I contemplate with delight and anticipation daily and this would be an incredibly cool reason.

this exactly! the main purpose of the outline is to be a map to guide me and remember all the things I want to include. obviously the end result will never be a one to one as the story grows, but if I'm able to sort out the whole, I can better get it to develop with clearer intention and connection.

I've occasionally gotten to the point where bits of conversation or description stream-of-consciousness simply need formatting to become part of the draft, but to me a 700 word bullet point list vs the chapter's eventual 5k is still a huge difference!

hmmmm. for me, the details of the outline are often what motivates me to get them into a readable state. I get a lot of satisfaction from turning the messy rambling into something someone else can enjoy too

very interesting! my instinct is to say I don't do drafts either but per this definition perhaps I do. to me, without the action and dialogue it's still "unreadable" as a story - especially as the outline is fragmented into bullet points and notes to myself even if I've gotten as far as beat by beat

I have a "full story" outline for a fic that's been sitting in my files since 2023. it's definitely not written, but I know exactly what's going to happen from start to finish. like, the 1500 words in there rn is certainly not the 10+ chapters it'll become, one day.

usually I'll outline as soon as I get the concept, and even the messiest free-flow first version of it will have a beginning, middle, and end. and if I love the idea the details will come naturally so said outline can get very specific. but it's still not written! am I wrong about that though?

I never considered outlining as actually writing the story. yes it's a pivotal step in helping me develop the plot, characters, themes in a way where they connect cohesively (though of course, things WILL change during drafting) but it's still just the outline. but it seems I'm in the minority here?
