Dang this is excellent
Quick and dirty re-sprite of this guy from Final Fantasy Adventure (original on the left) for practice developing this sprite style where it's still 16 pixels but foregoes facial features like eyes in order to have slightly more realistic proportions and an overall less square silhouette.. #pixelart
More than one person said this character struck them (lol) as a monk/martial arts/brawler archetype so here's an unpolished punching animation for the pink haired girl #pixelart #animation
Oooh been meaning to check this one out! Thanks for the input/recommendation!
Been contemplating how to give action-y feel of combos and positioning to a turn-based/grid-based game. My main ideas involve stamina/action points and attacks that have stun and knockback and movement inherent to them (like an attack that knocks back and stuns followed by a dash attack). Thoughts?
Hey thanks!
Okay cool, thank you ๐
Do her arms look a little too long or does it look fine because of the perspective..?
the reason being I was too lazy to do the rest when they are getting replaced anyway
*only some of which are animated for some reason ๐
Doubled the resolution to 320x180 but the character didn't stand out enough to so I added outlines, but that made the proportions look off, so this character also got a pixel taller but I think it looks pretty good now... Still got those FF1 walls and water tiles in there though* #pixelart #gamedev
Interesting!
What kind of character class/archetype do you think each of these evokes?
Thanks!
Went for a different vibe for the character on the right. What do you think of this sprite style btw? Sprites around this size (about 16 pixels) tend to have large heads to allow for facial features at such a small size but end up super chibi/not having much room for the rest of the character design
The full album releases April 10th!

I'm putting together a team... #pixelart
Inside me there are two wolves, they both have silly anime hair/the "two" genders idk lol
Thank you, warm is exactly what I was going for! When I tried to go for warmth before I would often end up trying to achieve it by going with the dark and desaturated colors as I tried before but having medium saturation with more brightness and contrast seems to work a lot better!
*this is purely an experiment in trying to make a cohesive and appealing color palette where the sprite stands out from the background without looking detached from it or out of place. If I were to move forward with the project I would redo the tiles!
@polyducks.bsky.social what do you think does this look a little more appealing and cohesive as a jumping off point at least?
I reworked the tiles and palette still just throwing things together to try to find a cohesive palette and vibe/aesthetic, also played around with a new sprite. (I heavily referenced the lovely looking upcoming game Kloa Child of the Forest for the parts of the background/tileset)
Will do, thanks again! ๐
Okay excellent, I'm going to play around with each of these concepts and see what I can come up with
Thank you so much for such an informative response, this gives me a lot to work with and think about!
The answer might be obvious but I'm clueless when it comes to color honestly which is why I am drawn to 1 bit but I started making this little project specifically with the goal of getting better at color so I would like to understand!
Do you mean that the sprite stands out too much now and the background looks bland in comparison?
I'm not sure what that would look like exactly, I made the background more dark and desaturated so the sprite would stand out because it was blending in too much when the background had higher contrast. I guess I'm not sure what the issue you are referring to is exactly.
