These cultures aren't safe for women, children, or other vulnerable people. There are far too many examples to say otherwise. And this abuse culture is allowed to thrive in far too many church spaces & directly affects how people vote and their willingness to overlook abuse at the highest levels.

As an MK (missionary kid), I always appreciate the perspective my fellow MKs have on global affairs. In this case, @loriadamsbrown.bsky.social, has written a thoughtful and heartfelt piece about her beloved Venezuela that is definitely worth the read.

But we must speak truth. No matter how ugly, disconcerting, or evil the truth might be. Why? For survivors! May they feel supported and cared for and may they know not everyone stands on the side of their abusers/enablers.
I equate the “Don't talk about Epstein” crowd with the “Don’t speak ill of John MacArthur” crowd. People don't want the truth. They want their version of the truth that allows them to continue viewing the world through a white picket fence, rose-colored glasses perspective. +
There is a direct through line from those saying "touch not God's anointed" when speaking up about pastoral abuse to "don't you love your country?" when speaking against the atrocities happening in this country under the current regime.

Seriously! But I also know that's part of the strategy of an authoritarian regime. To keep the people reeling, never feeling grounded, fearful. The problem is, it's working, but we must figure out how to resist.
