A5 interesting idea for an activity, considering how a platform might create a persona and decide what type of person you are. Does it know us better than we know ourselves or are there things completely outside of the platform that it doesn't know? Getting a bit philosophical here 😄 #LTHEchat

A4 Fully agree, it's a multidisciplinary skill and in the very polarised world we now live in, the role of educational institutions has to be ensuring different voices are heard and students can discuss those viewpoints #LTHEchat

A2 Totally agree, I think bias in all its forms has become so engrained in our technical lives that for many it's invisible so we need to constantly question it and resist it. #LTHEchat

Agree but I wonder if some people consider that the 'real people' aspect of social media means there is less bias than perhaps news organisations.

A2 #LTHEchat I wonder how much people are aware of the algorithms. When a family member asks if I saw a particular thing on social media?? What each of us sees on social media will be very different. Maybe we need to stop assuming students know this?

Interesting point that maybe we need these algorithms because of the sheer amount of content on these platforms. I had a student in my doctoral research interviews describe it as a postal worker who only puts letters in the postbox that you'll actually read #LTHEchat

A1 #LTHEchat I find that we mostly hear about algorithmic bias now in relation to AI but we seem to forget how much this is built into social media platforms and search engines. I expect this greatly affects what our students see and who they interact with when using social media.
