Good morning and thanks for your lovely comments ๐Ÿ˜Š #LTHEchat

A6 Good point about the synthesising, it just emphasises the echo chamber even further #LTHEchat

How did that go so quickly!! Thanks so much to the #LTHEchat organising team for your help this evening and for allowing me to host. Thanks everyone for the responses and discussion. I really enjoyed it.

๐Ÿ˜† Maybe the algorithm overlords didn't like us criticising it this evening #LTHEchat

A4 Love the idea of considering algorithms as gatekeepers to knowledge and information. It's a good way of viewing it #LTHEchat

A5 ๐Ÿ˜ Giving students the opportunity to evaluate the results of this is so useful. At the @openuniversity.bsky.social we use #PROMPT to help students evaluate sources. I hope this link works without an OU login: www.open.ac.uk/libraryservi... #LTHEchat

A5, wow great idea for an activity as this would very quickly show how they might get very different answers based on how they've used it in the past. Love all the different steps in this activity ๐Ÿ˜€ #LTHEchat

A6 I agree, the idea of adding AI into social media prompts and how that affects posts and responses increases the risk of reinforcing and amplifying certain voices and ways of discussion. So the critical evaluation skills are useful here too #LTHEchat

Sounds amazing, we definitely need a photo ๐Ÿ˜€ #LTHEchat

Yes, advertising really is the scourge of social media. I have a big birthday coming up next week and suddenly I'm getting adverts for life insurance ๐Ÿซฃ #LTHEchat

A5 interesting idea for an activity, considering how a platform might create a persona and decide what type of person you are. Does it know us better than we know ourselves or are there things completely outside of the platform that it doesn't know? Getting a bit philosophical here ๐Ÿ˜„ #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:50 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A5 wonderful idea. How did it go? Were the students able to reflect on the results afterwards? I imagine that also raises some worrying insights #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:48 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A4 Interesting to see the consensus that this needs to be covered at all levels, maybe even something students should already know how to do before they get to university. Is there always the issue of time though? #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:46 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A4 Fully agree, it's a multidisciplinary skill and in the very polarised world we now live in, the role of educational institutions has to be ensuring different voices are heard and students can discuss those viewpoints #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:43 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A3 I totally agree, people often view information on social media differently so the critical awareness they use in other spheres might not automatically cross over #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:40 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A2 Interesting point that as part of understanding the algorithms, maybe we should also teach students to use them to their advantage. #LTHEchat

A3 Interesting point that different schools and faculties may have different experiences of this. #LTHEchat

A3 #LTHEchat Great list here @suebecks.bsky.social I see a lot of the same, a lack of balance in arguments and limited critical thinking. This is one of the articles I mentioned in the chat blog doi.org/10.3390/soc1...

04.03.2026 20:34 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A1 Comparing the two platforms would be a great student activity (Check out Q5 when it comes ๐Ÿ˜€) #LTHEchat

A2 Good point. The skill of spotting bias and critically evaluating information is a life skill that isn't just for social media so teaching this skill is beneficial in any future #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:29 ๐Ÿ‘ 3 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A2 Totally agree, I think bias in all its forms has become so engrained in our technical lives that for many it's invisible so we need to constantly question it and resist it. #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:27 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 1 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

So true! #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:25 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Agree but I wonder if some people consider that the 'real people' aspect of social media means there is less bias than perhaps news organisations.

04.03.2026 20:24 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A2 Great points here about the risks of not questioning the algorithmic biases often built in to how these platforms work. Importance of teaching students to think more critically about what they see or read. #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:22 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A1 good point and we'll look at the AI addition to social media posts in Q6. Is it difficult to point to just social media for impact? Maybe part of a wider change in how we access information?

A1 the classic echo-chamber effect and the risk that this limits our exposure to other views and marginalised voices #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:18 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 0 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A2 #LTHEchat I wonder how much people are aware of the algorithms. When a family member asks if I saw a particular thing on social media?? What each of us sees on social media will be very different. Maybe we need to stop assuming students know this?

Interesting point that maybe we need these algorithms because of the sheer amount of content on these platforms. I had a student in my doctoral research interviews describe it as a postal worker who only puts letters in the postbox that you'll actually read #LTHEchat

04.03.2026 20:13 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

A1 #LTHEchat I find that we mostly hear about algorithmic bias now in relation to AI but we seem to forget how much this is built into social media platforms and search engines. I expect this greatly affects what our students see and who they interact with when using social media.
