The “machinal bypass” and how we’re using AI to avoid ourselves | PNAS The “machinal bypass” and how we’re using AI to avoid ourselves

Love this short opinion piece on “mechanical bypass” in analogy to “spiritual bypass”.

How Google Maps quietly allocates survival across London’s restaurants - and how I built a dashboard to see through it I wanted a dinner recommendation and got a research agenda instead. Using 13000+ restaurants, I rebuild its ratings with machine learning and map how algorithmic visibility actually distributes power.

I wanted dinner recommendations so I scraped 13,000+ London restaurants and accidentally discovered Google Maps is running a shadow economy. Anyway here's a dashboard and a political economy thesis: open.substack.com/pub/laurenle...

As someone who has bucked the trend and come from NZ to work in the NHS (started Jan 2020), I couldn’t agree more…

This is such a good corrective by @chrisgiles.ft.com to the "working-age welfare spending is exploding/out-of-control" narrative that more & more people seem to see as an incontrovertible fact www.ft.com/content/ee67...

Imagine being a voter in the continent right now. You are being asked to prepare for higher taxes or less state welfare, and probably both, to fund a generational rearmament as the US withdraws its shield. At the same time, your leaders keep trying to hook Trump with a state visit or with personal charm. This is a dog’s breakfast of a signal. Either we are living through a lasting rupture of the Atlantic bond, in which case Europe must start protecting itself, whatever the sacrifice, or this is a tiff so transient that it might be overcome with inducements and sweet talk.

I've done a U-Turn. Think this argument is persuasive on why Donald Trump should not have a state visit.

Trump’s expulsions are jaw-droppingly cruel. But they’re part of an American tradition | Steven Hahn Since colonial times, self-designated ‘communities’ have used expulsions to address supposed threats. It helps to explain how easy it has been for Trump to win support

There are only two options here: either Trump is the worst negotiator on earth who tanked the US economy or he played everyone in a pump and dump scheme while tanking the US economy. Now he has given himself 90 days to manipulate the markets again.

Americans were told reciprocal tariffs would be simple. But where did those numbers come from? Read FT Alphaville’s take on the method to the Trump administration’s madness: www.ft.com/content/e025...
