Actually, I’m speaking from firsthand experience. I have a new Carrier system, which replaced my 10 year old Mitsubishi, and neither worked well below 40°F or so. Maybe I’m buying crappy products, but my last one cost me $10,000. 🤷♀️

If you’re OK with a max indoor temp of about 64F for the duration of winter, you can get by with just a heat pump in places where the temp can dip into freezing. Ok for many people, but tough on others.
Maybe my (second) heat pump is $10,000 of crap, but when the temp goes below 40, it pretty much sucks for heating.
