‘It beggars belief’: MoD sources warn Palantir’s role at heart of government is a threat to UK’s security Experts say that claims UK data remains under government ownership miss the point that the company has the capability to build its own detailed picture of the British population, and even infer state ...

OpenAI, Google and Microsoft are all laying claims to expertise in educational research. They're appealing to their own AI, data, and scale capacities to do this, and wrapping it in the language of learning and cognitive sciences. It's a big tech takeover of educational research imo 🥶

New tools for understanding AI and learning outcomes OpenAI introduces the Learning Outcomes Measurement Suite to assess AI’s impact on student learning across diverse educational environments over time.

Under no circumstances should we allow OpenAI to become the self-authorized educational research evidenve source that it is trying to be. Vendors must not be research authorities. openai.com/index/unders...

So, let's review:
• Oracle has already fucked with the TikTok algorithm, the main reason people use the app, and people using the app is how the app makes money (by serving them ads).
• TikTok was already losing billions of dollars.
• Larry Ellison's wealth is almost entirely tied to his shares of Oracle.
• Oracle's shares are tied to the health of the company, and said shares are already losing value because of Oracle's egregious debt.
• This situation will only improve if Oracle is able to build data centers that are behind
schedule and it does not yet have the capital to build, requiring debt that bankers are hesitant to provide.
• Even if successful, if OpenAl cannot pay for the compute, Oracle's shares will slide into oblivion.
• All the while, Oracle just bought into one of its largest cloud customers, and is currently in the process of making its business less-valuable.
Great stuff.

Sidebar, and a note about bailouts: I'm sure some of you are worried about a government bailout of Oracle, and I hate to say that I think one would be likely with the Trump administration. To be clear, the bailout would be for the distressed debts associated with Oracle's data center projects - so $38 billion, $18 billion, whatever remains of Stargate Abilene's debt, and $14 billion if Stargate New Mexico goes ahead. This would be very unlikely to hold off the collapse of Oracle's stock price, and also be very unpopular with just about everybody. I honestly have no idea what form it might take, but there's little hope that Ellison would leave such a situation with much of his net worth in tact (though I doubt he'd ever be truly penniless, as he receives billions in dividends a year from Oracle, and Oracle would likely either have to sell to another company or sell bits of itself.
Perhaps there's a way some form of the company comes out the other end, but it won't be the same Oracle. Honestly, I think that's for the best. This company has worthwhile tech, it's just sold and serviced by the armies of Hell.

Osborne, now Head of OpenAI for Countries, reflected on the discussions in a LinkedIn post following the event, where he wrote that governments were “actively looking for ways to partner with us so its benefits reach more of their people.”

He added that while enthusiasm for AI was high, Davos also surfaced “the emergence of a new challenge: a growing capability overhang between how some countries are making great use this new technology and how others are not.”

Sorry but *what*? How did I not know that George Osborne - the architect of British public sector austerity - was now OpenAI's head of "OpenAI for Countries" pushing AI for the public sector, education and skills, and doing so at Davos and on LinkedIn? www.edtechinnovationhub.com/news/george-...

7 Reasons Teens Say No to AI Some young people only turn to artificial-intelligence chatbots as a last resort, citing concerns about relationships, creativity, the environment and more.

As these teens describe, AI can diminish human relationships; devalue art; threaten the environment; lead to laziness; give unreliable results; pose privacy concerns; and be misused.

So, please, stop with the narratives of inevitability and let's embrace a pedagogy and politics of refusal.
