This is a close-up of the center of one of the poppy flowers. A dark purple-ish circular form sits on a background of varying shades of orange. The round shape in the middle of the image reminds me of a spineless sea urchin, with lines radiating out from its center. It has an outer ring of short filaments —of the same dark purple color—that sort of resembles shag carpet.

These orange Poppies were not only a stunningly luminous orange color in the full sun, but contained this amazing anatomical form at their center. I had no idea that Poppies were so structurally complex! When we pay attention in life, the mundane becomes extraordinary.

I posted a picture similar to this one a few days ago, but that one had sun on the bird. In this one the bird is in the shade and the background has full sun. It is on fire!

Anyways, a great blue heron at Izaak Walton Nature Area in Longmont, Colorado.

I do love sparrows. So cheeky, brave, and earnest.

The crocus wasn't the first flower of the year though, that was the Skunk Cabbage which comes up very early.
