Spring has arrived, bringing the perfect weather for a picnic. Today also marks the release of 'Is A River Alive?' by @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social, a fascinating new read that explores the life and meaning of rivers. β¬οΈ
Designating these sites as official bathing waters would bring regular water quality testing throughout the season, clear public ratings, on-site signage, and action plans to tackle pollution if standards are not met. Your views can help shape safer, cleaner bathing waters.
πNew bathing water sites have been proposed for Pangbourne Meadow and a stretch of the River Thames between Ham and Kingston upon Thames.
Have your say in Defra's consultation by 23rd March β¬οΈ

Protecting our rivers requires collective action, from government, regulators, environmental organisations, investors, and water companies. By working together, we can improve the health of our waterways and protect the communities who depend on them.β¬οΈ
Thames21 has long raised the alarm about the impact of untreated sewage on our rivers. We want water companies to prioritise river health, invest in effective treatment and infrastructure, and be held accountable when they fail to meet environmental standards. πΈΒ©Channel 4β¬οΈ
@channel4tv.bsky.social's 'Dirty Business' highlights serious concerns that communities and environmental groups have been raising for years. It raises difficult questions about sewage pollution, river health, and public safety, issues that require urgent and transparent action.β¬οΈπ§΅
Thames21 is delighted to be part of the project, working with Essex and Oxfordshire County Council to reduce flood risk and improve soil management by scaling nature-based solutions, such as re-meandering and woodland creation, to slow flows and improve river catchment functioning.
Through Resilience Hubs in Greece, Cyprus, Finland, and the UK, NURISH co-develops practical, community-led responses to challenges such as flooding and water scarcity. β¬οΈ
NURISH is an EU-funded project helping rural and small urban communities adapt to climate change through nature-based solutions. Running over 4.5 years, it supports the EUβs vision for resilient communities by building local skills, green jobs, and sustainable land and water management.β¬οΈ
Last summer we saw an extended dry period, and we've just experienced one of the wettest January's on record. "Exceptional" weather is becoming more and more frequent as the climate changes, but healthy rivers can help protect communities from the worst effects of climate change.β¬οΈπ§΅
The series is inspired by a decade-long investigation into England's water companies, as former police detective Ash (Thewlis) and his neighbour Peter (Watkins), a Professor of Computational Biology, team up to uncover a sewage scandal. www.channel4.com/press/news/d...
@channel4tv.bsky.social has released a first look at Dirty Business, a drama based on real events starring Jason Watkins and David Thewlis as "two unlikely detectives". π§΅β¬οΈ

This is shocking. Our rivers are already under immense pressure, and this rubbish dump sits just metres from the River Roding. Regulators and local councils must act immediately to safeguard this precious river. news.sky.com/story/this-s...
