This! In Canada too. You could see the (brief) change in suburban development. Much more multifamily and smaller homes. But it didn't last long!

Proud of my @gillianpetit.bsky.social and PhD student Selvia Arshad β new @irpp.org piece out today
Classifying social spending as an "operating expense" quietly sets it up to be cut. They make the case for evaluating it as investment using MVPF

A work in progress knit showing vibrant neon colors on a gray background in a science motif. At the bottom are brains, followed by flasks with a neon green liquid and at the top a bright yellow ruler with black markings.
Working on a new cowl using the Science Doodle Deck and our new coordinating Science Lab mini set with a gray base tonal. Iβm in love with the little brains!!

FYI the 1970s oil crisis was the impetus for Copenhagen turning into a cycling city
Three children riding a passengers on a bicycle. School bags are in the front crate. One child is in front of the drivers seat but behind the handlebars. The other two kids are on the back seat. The bike is a Fr8 by WorkCycles
With gas prices soaring, some people might search for cheaper transportation options. In many cites, a bicycle is a cheap and easy way to get around gas free. Give it a try.
He finished it in under 2h... and loved retelling all the mishaps the other children got themselves into.
But alas, he's stubborn and refusing to try another. He desperately wants to play and not be boring like his older siblings...
So I have two readers... and am desperately scheming to make my third one too.
Today, DS, the youngest, was coveting a marc rober platinum ticket... I suggested Charlie and the chocolate factory for where the idea originated, and a lesson on the kids who won
He is 50 pages in already = success
Yep, threading in bsky isn't always obvious!
Um, it's the food professor blog, and says Sylvain Charlebois in the author spot...
I also tried to get a second source that this was a uniquely Canadian issue amongst the G7, but was unable to find anything other than news articles quoting Sylvain...
Same!
How to Think Critically About Data (Even if you're not a data nerd like me) A free 45-minute Lunch & Learn session with Robson Fletcher, Data & Storytelling Strategist. Topics include: - How statistics & data visualization can mislead -- intentionally or accidentally - Practical tips for evaluating data you are presented with - Why feelings DO matter when it comes to facts Tuesday, March 17 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Via Google Meet (pre-registration required)
I'm no longer a data journalist but, as an independent practitoner, one of my goals is still to help people make sense of the daily deluge of data we're all swimming in.
To that end, I'm hosting this free online session on March 17.
You don't have to be a nerd to come nerd out with me... π€

thanks to @volts.wtf for having me on to talk about coordinating and planning fossil phase out to build a better and actually decarbonized world. thereβs a lot we can do if we imagine a people-centered, service oriented future β and a LOT we miss if we donβt.
The requisition is an ongoing requirement. The recently comittted Capital expenses for new schools are a short-term lumpy expense. Not exactly a counter argument from the province
Me, in the elevator with my boss, in my bike gear, in the winter, days after I told him I was pregnant....
My OB knows, and it's not the biking that's dangerous... it's the drivers!
Here Comes Canada's National Power Grid...Finally!
Tim Weis, @pembina.org on today's announcement about provincial agreement re. a national electricity grid corridor.
Is this a nation-building project?

oof... I've had mine boil dry - I will never forget that smell

Alberta Budget 2026 didn't raise taxes. It just raised your property taxes β the one tool the province left municipalities, then spent years criticizing them for using. Wrote about it.

I think I'd probably take these over an article by the food professor...
a weakening Canadian dollar, import costs, a tax holiday last year look to be the biggest contributors.

'The problem with fossil fuels is their intermittency'
DS the youngest desperately wanted to see the 4am eclipse... He woke up to a cloudy night and he handled that disappointment really well.
Side note, he's already asked when the next lunar eclipse is and made us put alarms in our phones to remind us...
Great video on the many facets of why women cycle less than men. This can be a contentious issue so it's good to see such a dispassionate discussion that teases out some critical aspects of the gender gap.
