Not many people in Britain, it seems, have heard of Fort Breendonk in Belgium - a pre-WW1 army fort that was turned into a WW2 prison by the occupying Germans.
There are many stories of the cruelties carried out here by the SS, some involving the commandant's dog. /1
Un long couloir voûté s’étire à perte de vue, creusé dans l’épaisseur massive du fort. Les murs blanchis, marqués par l’humidité, les fissures et le temps, dégagent une froide austérité. Le sol carrelé, usé et irrégulier, reflète faiblement la lumière crue des lampes suspendues au plafond, alignées comme une procession implacable. À droite et à gauche, des portes sombres et des ouvertures étroites rythment l’espace, évoquant l’enfermement et la surveillance. Des tuyaux et câbles courent le long des parois, renforçant l’impression d’un lieu fonctionnel, oppressant. L’ensemble respire le silence, la lourdeur et la mémoire douloureuse du Fort de Breendonk, chargé d’une histoire tragique.
