A few years ago at UBCM I spoke with the health minister about the variance in per capita psychiatrists by health authority and regions vs hospitalization for self-harm and suicide.

Prince Rupert had 1/16th per capita the number of psychiatrists, and Northern is 5 times a likely to hosp., 3 X death

While I haven't read the agenda, that sounds very short-sighted.

I have no idea how to meaningfully advance this, but I feel pretty strongly as a variance of Klein's/Thompson's "Abundance" that looking at the regulatory standards that drive up costs above baseline for government projects is a must.

Canucks fans have been blessed with some great announcers, and no one was better than Jim.

I look forward to the op ed on how Carney should be attending the season finale of the next season of the Bachelor instead of diversifying Canada's trading partners.

Long term we need to have real conversations about how wealth is distributed, how taxes are collected, and what standard of services and quality of life should we expect.

Creating airtight standards from a legal and insurance perspective will price out large sections of the population eventually.

But to your point, there's a massive shift needed at all three levels to be more flexible and let insurance companies charge premiums accordingly.

Single family homes built to code isn't an answer for the diverse needs of our population, and fixing the legislation would help the short term.

The building code is set from recommendations at the federal level that are adapted at the provincial level.

Local governments intrude when there's a bylaw infraction, and uphold prov code. In this case a local government could withhold a certificate of occupancy which would have insurance impacts.

We spent a year on this back in the day.

Although it's an election year, I strongly encourage using as many chicken related puns as possible.

Long story short, no roosters, keep it off the edge of the property, and keep it at a reasonable number was where we ended up.

Nothing will be real information, but hey, look at how great the stock market is doing!

Hallucinations are going to be a massive, massive problem. I think it's important to start planting flags now at every level of government that the platforms are going to be held responsible before it's too late

Read through your article, it's solid. A bit more eye-opening on section two when you look at housing starts per capita, let alone flat amounts as you have.

Advocating for higher fees for new lower density housing and minimizing dccs would both be helpful, which you mention. Kudos.

As someone who ran in politics at the local level to address housing issues: supply stabilizes the market and in the rental market in particular, supply causes modest but noticeable declines.

There will ultimately be a floor for supply side interventions, ergo you need more non-market housing.

I love how one of the few references is to the same website. Ugh.

Pretty sure any time you map out the vacancy rate and the increase in cost of rentals the two pretty much mirror each other.

There's a tendency to a vapid, self-congratulatory contrarianism because you're opposing "developers."

I had a lot more interaction on what was once Twitter, but I can't support a company that keeps an extremist figure as its CEO.

I think the gradual suffocation of print journalism in small communities is worth the risk of undue concentration of a public broadcaster.

It's not a perfect solution, but it ensures some work will be done.

There was a whole ecosystem in the music industry back when I was young, and I worry that instead of a pyramid of indie labels and majors with connected A&R staffers we instead have an algorhythmic slop.

Do kids read zines anymore? I doubt it. Hope I'm wrong, but it feels uniqueness is endangered.

Red Famine is an amazing book, and she's a brilliant woman. Her husband is also fantastic.

All of the horrendously cool music I used to listen to is now either "classic" or forgotten.

It's kind of a weird feeling.

That's absolutely bonkers. We're creatures of the provinces. If they want to change the legislation, they should run for provincial office in the next BC election.

Great to hear. My council isn't amenable, and you've probably thought about this ages ago, but BC Builds is a perfect fit for housing for nurses. Lisa Helps is great and her most recent presentation at Housing Central last week specifically mentioned health authorities as a potential partner.

The issue isn't the portion of America that is sane, the issue is that the portion that is currently in power. Even worse can come into power in the future if the Republicans don't clean out the Nazi-adjacent staffers which are a portion of their youth movement, which will be a threat to Canada.

To your point re: sources, this video from a session at UBCM is informative, in my view.
