Christ is its head, bishops watchful eyes, milites the chest and arms, labourers the feet, and so on.
He is referring specifically to the multi- and cooperative functions of Christian peoples, but hopefully this is something else interesting in regards to what you are looking for!

To add to what has been said already - Bernard of Clairvaux (everybody's favourite 12th-century loudmouth!) writes of the corpus christianorum in reference to members of the "Church", the concatenation of which is necessary for reunification with Christ.

On the 15th July I passed my viva (with no corrections!) - over 6 years of work is finally at an endπ§βπ
