Right now, there's someone right now on Bandcamp whose father made them listen to Joy Division on vinyl who will use this.

It's possible to write the horseshoe prior as a ratio of two Bessel functions in a way that is amenable to sampling/EM, and that's when I checked out and cracked open BRMS. (I coded it by hand, and it worked, but it felt esoteric, occult even.)

For parsimonious: digamma (log of the derivative of the gamma); amongst polysyllabic: the density can be described as a modified Bessel function of the 3rd kind; emotionally/aesthetically: "tilting" a distribution does the same thing to me that "moist" does, but with more math.

Thank you for sharing, and the only suggestion I'd make is to start thinking/phrasing in terms of Europe, not Germany. Germany cannot stand up to or compete with the US economically, but the EU/Europe can.

Everything is bad, but at least I can focus on my dissertation chapter about how the British in 1915 didn’t have the navy to force a strait when it needed to because it spent the previous decades funding their army’s misadventures in unimportant areas that turned into expensive quagmires.

Please god, do not add a push-up requirement to the tenure review process.

I'm trying to figure out how to adapt. Because it's here. It frees us up to do abnormal work, I guess? Or differentiate on new skills that are more than manipulating symbols.

For $220k, I'll jab myself with four different drugs a year, and report back a few days later, as you wish.

Papers that are homeruns will stay difficult, but a normal paper with a modest contribution has gotten much, much easier. Many, many of us will have to retool, learn to differentiate.

To give you a sense of how big a deal this is: Summers’ PhD advisor made NBER what it is today

Good. There can be no room for how he treated students in the academy. It's changing, generationally, but changing.

I suspect that that post was not written by someone currently in Tehran.

My real worry: Biden just tried a lot of that, trillions in investment, and got zero reward electorally. None. The opposite, actually. He got kicked out and hated for it. The good policy is not good politics, and we need good politics to get power.

Don't make them choose. That just puts them in an uncomfortable spot.

An ancient Kernos which is in the rough shape of a sheep

An ancient Kernos which is in the rough shape of a sheep

This sheep-like vessel dates back to the Early Cycladic I Period (c. 3100 - c. 2700 BCE)!

It is made from marble and measures 22cm in length. Holes at the neck and tail suggest that it was meant to be suspended, and the two hollowed out cups on its back were probably used as containers of some kind

As half-a-follow-up, the US would be better off politically if Silicon Valley floated into the ocean. Remember when a tech mogul took over public administration for 3 months? For kicks? Europe emulating the US in tech policy is *not* the answer. Grow up, differentiate, be yourself.

I'm happy to not have a trillion dollar European tech company. That's a fantastic one. Give me ten thousand hundred million ones! US massive tech size is a statement about capital accumulation, not innovation!

LOVED this book. Got me to read Saussure, Jakobson, Hjelmslev, and think properly about LLMs, cognition, culture. Buy one for you, then one for a friend.
