I really like the Japanese language and the way it works, and I am often dissatisfied if I have to rely on someone else's translation because I don't have access to the source, but it's also not some like mystical magical thing. It's just another language — which can do some things easily, some not.

Because Japanese is very phonetic in its dialogue, character voice direction is very easy to manipulate on paper.
Similarly misspelling words all over the place to simulate accents in English has fallen heavily out of favor in modern writing and would get you essentially excommunicated.
Tip for niri users: I've noticed that the audio will often skip if you have a video playing (at least in firefox) in an off screen window.
You can solve this problem by ensuring the video isn't in the active tab (just make a new empty tab if needed and swap to it).
Because of both space and time constraints, a translator has to pick and choose what to drop and what to (attempt to) replicate.
(Obviously, AI is terrible at this task, because it relies on huge context windows (at least in a theoretical sense) and *consistent* decisions.)
I tend to push back heavily against *Japanese Language Supremacy* based takes these days, but the truth is Japanese encodes information differently than English (overall), so a lot of effort has to go into more roundabout ways of conveying what's missing from a simple pass.

So far (01-13) AoC 2017 has been pretty fun.
I think I may have over-complicated 08b, but haven't really hit any walls. I really recommend going back and poking at some of the previous years of Advent of Code. (Especially if you did 2024 - there were many callbacks - things will feel familiar.)

Metroid Prime 2 is the best of the quadrilogy.
I tried to do a manga one but 蟲師 failed to come up, and I refuse to make a grid without that at the top.

I used to not like the opening theme to Akagi, but it has really grown on me over the years.

Last time I attempted to use fcitx5 it was a disaster, but I'm having little to no problems using it in wayland.
Unlike uim, it does not have an inherent "vi-mode" but fiddling with keyboard shortcuts (setting ESC to turn off the IME) helps — even if it means needing to double escape sometimes.

does the trick just fine. compare on a tuple works the same without having to explicitly define the "when x0 = x1 compare y0 y1" behavior.
I'm now honestly curious whether EtoJ translators are given this large of a time-frame on average, and that's where they got their estimates from.
In this alternate reality, of course AI makes sense.
Once upon a time, I thought that a quick 1 week turnaround did mean an expectation of a less polished more literal translation, but I was sorely wrong.
It's possible that they're conflating the time it takes to translate say, a full on novel as opposed to a volume of manga, and using that because it makes the numbers look better for them, but honestly pubs expect faster times for novels too.

Yeah, this graphic basically reveals that they think JtoE translators take 8 weeks to output a "literal" translation, that then has to be cleaned up over another 4 weeks, instead of the actual expectation that JtoE translators produce polished work within 1-2 weeks.

The way my brain refuses to read 男の娘 as "the man's daughter".
Honestly, for the "good enough" people — they should just buy the originals and scan their phone over the page for a quick AI translation that is "good enough" — you can build a TL bot with publicly available software.
Better that than something desecrated beyond repair.
It's both a disrespect to the medium and a disrespect to the "customer" of course, but it makes sense that it is first on the chopping block — they're banking on "close enough" being what most people want, with story secondary to a vague sense of entertainment.
