Ella stood. “Go or I’ll kill you.”
His voice rumbled like a landslide. “You can’t kill me. I am Darkness.”
“But it's the season of joy."
“And grief. Sorrow and love. Ask your mum."
"Okay."
The room brightened. Ella saw that Darkness was gone. Christmas morning was dawning bright.

And then she remembered the neighbors. A blanket wrapped around her shoulders. A girl giving her a stuffed bunny.
People are good, she thought, and the ice in Ella's heart melted.
