A mother on a postnatal ward
"Postnatal wards are meant to nurture and support new mothers at a time when they are highly vulnerable, but this is the opposite of what I saw."
Alice Giucca describes how her experience on a postnatal ward showed a system in collapse

I spoke to Chris Smyth for this Times piece on the rising numbers of people claiming Personal Independence Payment (PIP) for anxiety & depression (link to the article at the end of this thread)
Here are the five key things we need to consider to understand this trend... π§΅
I don't think I could find data on this when I looked, but I'd guess that there are a lot of people with support needs who are living in temporary accommodation and getting no support, at a higher cost than supported housing. And if that isn't reliably recorded, how can we know the scale of need?
We have such uneven spending on housing for people in need, too - dwindling budgets for voluntary sector, commissioned housing (from legacy Supporting People budgets), vs escalating costs for reactive & unstrategic use of temporary accommodation and spot purchased, typically private provision
PLEASE SHARE! We are looking for info about providing effective support to young mothers and birthing parents (aged 25 and under) in the perinatal period. We are looking for papers/reports/evaluations/blogs/commentaries. Send to: sw-perinatal-research@york.ac.uk. Information: perinatalsupport.co.uk
It's frustrating as a reader too, when you can tell there is lots of interesting material but papers don't have enough space for it!
Today we're in Birmingham for our 'Back To Their Futures Summit: Transforming Care for children subject to deprivation of liberty (DoL) orders'.
What do children on DoL orders need?

I grew up in town in the 90s/early 2000s and this just unlocked forgotten childhood memories! The old one was so much nicer
βStaff assessed the moral worth of families through inspection and case-work, often relying on local gossip and judging families on their ability to keep up appearances. A dirty home meant a deviant family life.β

open.spotify.com/episode/4f99... Loved this conversation with Sophie Willan, especially how she talks about her mum (balancing compassion, anger at the injustice of it all, and personal boundaries - think v few of us could manage all three!), and about her own self-understanding and self-compassion
It has made me think that I don't see much about teenagers and young men learning misogyny from their fathers - it's more often presented as a generational backlash against feminism or something they encounter on their own online - when (anecdotally!) other hateful views are often nurtured at home
I know this isn't your main point, but it'ss interesting if dads (and not just young dads, from that report summary) are more likely to be aware of *and* more likely to be positive about Andrew Tate than their sons... I don't feel like that's how his appeal is talked about in the media etc?

There is a term for this type of 'investment' model. It is not a kind one. Deregulated rents are a problematic area in temporary and emergency accommodation provision. This business model is a clear example of why.
also, totally unrelated but I think you play frisbee with some of my friends from secondary school!
You've probably come across it already, but I found the Canadian Family and Natural Supports model discussed in this Churchill report v interesting! www.churchillfellowship.org/ideas-expert...
I'd be interested to see some research on the experiences of care leavers who move in with family members at/after 18 -- whether it's a sign that reunification or kinship care might have worked earlier (I don't have an instinct about this either way!)

I remember doing a bit of digging after reading this (damming) ethnography and concluding it was almost definitely about Mossbourne. There are some striking details, like staff patrolling chicken shops after school hours and punishing kids who go there manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781526116208/
I have now been sent a pdf of the final version, but thank you! :-)
ah, I'd be really interested to read this if I had access to it!
New @jrf-uk.bsky.social research reveals Bangladeshi, Black African and Pakistani families are up to 5x more likely to be living in persistent very deep poverty compared to white families in the UK.
