How many primary age children do you teach who think 1-8=7 and what are your 'go to' strategies for persuading them otherwise?

Joan Jett?
Saw them at the Tramshed not long ago. Just amazing.
Always want to listen to this as well.

And in other breaking news bears have been seen shitting in the woods.
Walking in beautiful natural spaces and listening to really loud angry punk music. Not always at the same time.
Jah Wobble?
It has a really annoying tune?
Looks like a cross between Alexi Sale and Mussolini. You wouldn't paint Mussolini would you??
I don't know who it is but I would like to know what surprised him.
He sure is pretty.
My first thought was John McDonnell but no. Not sure yet.
Should say 11 and 12 are .....etc
And 3 times is two times and one times
4 times is 2 and 2
6 is 5 and 1
7 is 5 and 2
10 is .....etc
There are strategies for 9
so you are left with 8x8 :)
Many is a little vague I suppose. My guess would be 5%. That is a lot of children.
You can reach 'expected standard' in year 6 without being able to do any year 6 maths. Which is interesting in itself.
You I think are making the point that school doesnt work for all. I am agreeing.
Many children arrive at secondary school working at year 2 level at best.
If you are not going to teach these children primary maths why not and what is the point of not teaching them?
It makes no sense.
I was suggesting 5 hours a week of maths at primary level, which is about right I think? Used to be when I worked in a school.
I am not suggesting they do :)
You missed out the words 'with my tongue'
I am not trying to win any argument and I am not quibbling.
I am trying to say that in maths (my area) it is devastating that so many children 'fail' when there is no reason for them to do so.
The system is wrong and needs to change.
You are saying no amount of coaching will get some pupils to a certain stage.
My point is that 10 years of coaching would get very nearly all children to at least year 4 level maths and nearly all of them to a GCSE pass if it were structured correctly.
So the system is set up to fail.
We need a system change.
What perecentage of children could not achieve year 4 level maths if they had 5 hours of maths every school week for 10 years?
What percentage of children do you think will never understand Year 4 level maths for example? Regardless of how long you have got to teach them.
My guess that it is well under 1%
Craig's Primary maths White Rose linked Diagnostic Questions have been a fanastic addition to my online group classes for home educated children.
So easy to put together a really nice end of unit check quiz too.
Couldn't make it as I was teaching. Teaching a tricky concept would you know :) could have done with some advice.
I think 'prints, Andrew' said the custody officer is a great line today :)
I will take that! I worry it is a bit 'busy' but we have built up to it. I am not a massive fan of the 'cherry' part whole model but I do use the White Rose resources and in general I like them.
Michelin starred.
