About 30 years ago here in the west of Ireland I saw a sandwich board sign outside a hardware store advertising a "Wench, for knocking dangerous trees".

My great, great uncle was one of the first to die. He was little more than a child, just turned 18.

This probably explains their current film choices.

Doubtless coming to the BBC next week: Kilo Two Bravo, and A Bridge Too Far.

Huh. Well I fell asleep during Platoon and woke up to The Bridge at Remagen.

BBC clearly getting a bit gung ho about heroic US soldiers and the human cost of epic, pointless battles. That's probably not a good sign.

BBC 4 are rather oddly showing Platoon this evening. I mean, I'm watching it of course, but the sheer level of "'Murica, fuck yeah" is already giving me a rash. The pointlessness of war is visually overshadowed by the pretty boy actors and dated Americana.

For everyone asking, here's how you get your Eurosky account.
Including using EU-haul to migrate everything from your existing account.

I managed to do it so it can't be that hard

Thanks to @jasonlee.eurosky.social whom you should follow cos he's a top fella.

I increasingly think the accusation of cowardice on our government's part lets them off the hook too easily, and that it is perfectly reasonable to infer the Taoiseach and Tรกnaiste just think it's fine for the US to murder Iranian children, given they have repeatedly refused to say it was bad

This is a shocker:
"The scheme is diverting some 15,000 construction workers away from house building. By coincidence that is close to the shortfall in building workers."

Combine this with the fact that data centers and AI are gobbling up all our new renewable energy and we're in deep trouble.

John McManus: We need a retrofit reality check; the figures donโ€™t stack up and we canโ€™t be bothered Most of us have concluded that retrofitting doesnโ€™t make sense

โ€œwe were legally obliged to come up with a plan in 2024 for the EU. Rather than bite the bullet on tackling the impediment to developing renewable energy assets we cobbled together some magical thinking about retrofitting and electric vehicles.โ€

Curse you! If there's anything I dislike more than Paddy's day celebrations, it's Americans calling it St Patty's ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜…

Delighted with CC though. The timing of such mild rebuke everything ๐Ÿค—

Honestly thought I was hearing him on the radio the other day but no, there was an absence of Gerard despite the war and the perfect scenario for him to opinionate on. Hope he's keeping OK even though I rarely agree with him ๐Ÿ™ He puts out valuable input for our little country.

Baby-brain nonsense to pretend this a matter of personal courage from the captains and crew, and not the straight-forward economics of prohibitively astronomical insurance costs.

Also, easy to be vicariously brave about sailing a giant floating bomb under Shaheds when you're safe in a Fox studio.

love how we killed the old, frail anti-nuke ayatollah just to have him replaced with his young, healthy son who wants nukes and who just had his father, mother, wife, and child murdered on the same day by his mortal enemy. surely this will bring peace to the region

That's charitable of you but my religion thankfully doesn't forbid me from calling the whole shagging lot of them dumber than a bag of hammers.

Oh I regularly confuse the shit out of my American guests by thoroughly explaining local politics from the 1840s to present day. I have trapped at least two bemused couples at the guest house door with the maths of the PR system. They love it, I'm sure ๐Ÿ˜

Indeed. I run a small guest house in Ireland and the latest Americans to book with me for August have already stated in their cover message "we're peaceful people". Which I thoroughly appreciate as I now don't have to worry that they're not.

Like, the only "attention deficit" I have is for stuff that bores me rigid, and the hyperactivity is not a disorder.

OK, so I've never been able to commit to a subscribed academic or career path but at my age, that feels like a *you* problem. #ADHD

Finally! A word that's ๐Ÿ’ฏ times more descriptive of my creative processing than "attention deficit hyperactivity disorder". Hypercuriosity is *precisely* what I enjoy about my racing brain, that enables me to achieve so many disperate & technical challenges. #ADHD www.positive.news/society/yout...

In November 2013 a Ukrainian protest comprising thousands of college students became a Euromaidan of millions.

Normal men and women without strong political views faced down paramilitary thugs in the freezing cold.

Asked why, they said the same thing he does.

"They're beating our children."
