No, what I'm saying is that the game devs back then cared more about the people playing games, and so they wanted to make sure that the people who were buying/renting games were actually getting tons of hours out of the game, rather than beating the game quickly then forgetting about it.
Back in those days games often didn't have a lot of content due to limited storage space on the cartridges, and so they greatly increased the difficulty so you could "get your money's worth" by needing to play the game a ton to beat the difficult levels.
