De-anthropomorphizing โ€œAIโ€: From wishful mnemonics to accurate nomenclature | First Monday

This has been a super helpful guide by @emilymbender.bsky.social, Peter Zuckerman and @nannainie.bsky.social as I'm editing my thesis. Highly recommend.

I low key wish this would be a plug-in that would underline the red flaggy turns of phrases as I'm writing. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ

We Need to Talk About How We Talk About 'AI' | TechPolicy.Press We share a responsibility to create and use empowering metaphors rather than misleading language, write Emily M. Bender and Nanna Inie.

"Anthropomorphizing language...portrays a world view in which the people responsible for developing the systems are not held accountable for the systemโ€™s inaccurate, inappropriate, and sometimes deadly output,โ€ write @emilymbender.bsky.social and @nannainie.bsky.social.

Anthropomorphizing language conceals the limitations of AI, promoting misplaced trust. @emilymbender.bsky.social & @nannainie.bsky.social suggest focusing on a systemโ€™s functionalities: instead of saying a model is โ€œgood atโ€ something, say what it is โ€œgood for." www.techpolicy.press/we-need-to-t...

"The media has largely let [tech companies] set the terms of the debate, right down to the terminology used in any discussion of these systems."

From @nannainie.bsky.social & me in @techpolicypress.bsky.social on how to spot and resist anthropomorphizing language about so-called "AI".

Looking forward to Travis Kelce's girlfriend's married-with-children era when she'll musically address the salient questions in later life such as "Is it chill that I need 2-factor-fucking-authentification for accessing John's Excel sheet?" and "Mommy, why is it ok that cars are faster than cars?"

Did you know that the ideation tools that most creative professionals have in common are the simplest ones: pen & paper, phone notes, and the phone camera?
