Part of today’s UK government spending review includes £750 Million on a new supercomputer, to be hosted by the University of Edinburgh.

UPDATE: Police have recovered a firearm during searches of the Roseburn path in Edinburgh, they say it’s part of Operation Portaledge, the ongoing investigation into gang related violence across Scotland’s central belt.
A marking and assessment boycott is also being considered by the Union.

I spoke with UCU Edinburgh President Sophia Woodman earlier.
She told me they think the universities finances are “quite healthy” compared to the sector with “enormous reserves”.
And that they have “adequate resources to cover a downturn without cutting staff.”

For context, the University says it costs roughly £120 Million per month to run the institution.
There’s no information on the scale of reduction in staff the University is looking at yet.
Although applications for a voluntary redundancy scheme will close this Friday.
NEW: The University of Edinburgh says it needs to close a financial gap of 10% of its turnover (£140 Million) in the next 18 months.
“Radical action” will mean a lower staff base and the Uni will review all capital expenditure - including approved projects.
