Maybe you should read some history. You're blaming the wrong thing -- whoever has the worst religion has nothing to do with it. It totally depends on who has the biggest guns. Religion had nothing to do with regime change in Iran the first time, in Bolivia, in Brazil, in Chile, etc., etc.

To ask if the UN is irrelevant or "what the UN will do?" completely misses the point of what the organization is. What does a Medical Association do when a doctor doesn't follow their by-laws or a Financial Association do when a bank does not follow their by-laws?

They elect a Secretary General to keep track of what's going on, be a point person for communications from different states, and report back to the Member States on all of that and keep records and files on those incidents, communications, etc. in accordance with the procedures they set up.

Member states decided to make an organization dedicated to peace and law. They wrote the protocols, procedures and legal codes. It is their responsibility to follow those and to ensure other member states follow those.

So many of the reporters do not seem to understand what the UN is and what the Secretary General's position is. He is not a Czar or Emperor or President or Prime Minister. He is more akin to a legal advisor, mediator, and manager.
