I mostly use windfall woods, which has led to an obsession with picking up sticks when I'm out. This piece of beech wood came back from Germany with me on my last trip, and it made the cutest most beautiful little hook!

🧢 Another larch crochet hook for today. The internet will tell you that the most popular crochet hook size is 5mm, but the ones I've sold were mostly in the 3-4mm range, so I've been trying to make a few more in those sizes. This one is about 3.75mm.

🧢 Elm is also a nice wood for some lovely grain patterns. I used to have an elm in the garden, which sadly succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease, but it left behind a number of badly placed and apparently unkillable offspring, which provide the material πŸ˜…

🧢 The very first crochet hook I ever carved, oh, back in the summer of 2019, was this little number from an oak branch I found while hiking. It's aged beautifully and I'll never get tired of looking at the pretty, pretty end grain pattern.

🧢 By far the weirdest wood I've ever worked with is fuchsia. It's unbelievably wet (= impossible to sand) when green, and unbelievably hard (= impossible to carve) when dry, and has the most unfortunate way of shrivelling and twisting as it dries out. It could be perfect for smaller hooks, if... 1/2

🧢 The other good thing about cherry wood is that it will stay stable even at a smaller size - not all types of wood will. The smallest size crochet hook I've made is 2mm. Not quite small enough for the teeniest tiniest of laces, but hey...

It’s so weird that not so long ago, like, less than 20 years, the progressive feminist position was gender de-segregation in sport and other male dominated spaces. Then the terfs came along and convinced the mainstream that the most progressive feminist position is that women are weak and feeble.

🧢Most commonly I use cherry wood for my crochet hooks, because it's easiest to find around here. It's also got some really nice colours.

🧢 For wood, I use anything I can get my filthy paws on, really. This crochet hook was made from a rosemary bush in my garden, that I had to cut back because it was blocking a path.

(That was also when I learned about the existence of rosemary beetles.)

Did you know that the labels hardwood and softwood say nothing about how hard or soft a wood is? It's just about whether a tree has leaves (hard) or needles (soft).

This #crochet hook is made from larch, which is one of the hardest woods we have, despite being classed as a softwood.

Have I mentioned I also make #crochet hooks? Let's have a look!

Sometimes in the summer I get to spend a few days at my grandparents' cottage all by myself, which is blissfully boring, and usually ends with me finding some new wood to try out. This one's lilac, which turned out to be super-smooth.

It depends on the garment, but if we're talking jumper, I think with only one stitch and three rows difference I'd just go for it. Unless you're going for a skin-tight fit, a few extra stitches per row shouldn't make that much difference on such a thin yarn.

This year I decided to do something about my drawing skills, so I signed up to Loish's patreon, and a couple of tutorials in, it already feels like I'm making progress... Though it's hard now to look at people without analysing their facial planes...

A Return to the Box A couple of years ago, you may remember, I discovered both some history of my hometown, and a way to make quite pretty boxes, and blogged about it at length here. At that time, I was still using PV…

I managed to rescue/ finish my little box and have blogged about it here:
