We haven't offered prints because rights were part of the commission. It was an unusual deal at the time. I suspect it's something that could be worked out, but I'm not sure it'll ever happen.

Damnit, I keep fixing it then cutting & pasting the wrong alt-text. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Perhaps a creature design feature for the newsletter?
There's advice on materials and technique in the FAQ on the website: www.michaelwhelan.com/faq/
Also, Muddy Colors is an art community I work with that also has useful information. For example, @sarahfinnigan.bsky.social wrote a 2-part guide on acrylics:

I'll be glad to mention it the next time we discuss new prints. We've offered prints of a few covers in the series.
No ECCC for me this weekend! The costs to vend have become insurmountable, unfortunately.
Your support would still be SO appreciated though! ๐

This finished at $11,875.00 last night. This is the third concept in the plus $10K range at Heritage in the last year. The other Whelan concept at auction went for $5K. Both excellent comps.
Coincidentally, Dan dos Santos asked me about instructional videos last week since they do a lot of that over at Muddy Colors. When I shared Michael's reservations, Dan said he just needed to get over it. ๐
And I agree...Michael would be a great teacher. I'll keep working on him about it. 3/3
Michael has said that he takes such a unique approach to each painting that he doesn't feel like he could provide much in terms of instruction. Instead he shares process for individual paintings instead. This is probably the best example:

We get a lot of requests in the realm of instruction, a topic covered in the website FAQ:

I sent in corrections to Heritage because the title of the book and publisher are wrong. The art was for the frontispiece of the Archival Press edition of The Vanishing Tower. 3/3
The Demonslayer comp is of particular note because:
1) There's no public sales data on Elric outside of the newer pieces we've listed. I've been waiting years for something to come to market.
2) Prelims for major work like this have jumped into the 5 figure range.

Concept for ELRIC DEMONSLAYER matted in black and framed in gold. Elric's clothes are torn to shreds but he stands victorious straddling a green scaled demon with Stormbringer drawn back over his head ready to deal the killing blow.
Preliminary concept for WHERE EVIL DWELLS tripled matted (?) and framed in gold. A warrior in black tunic emblazoned with red crouches back from a horde of monsters. He grips his sword with both hands.
There's a couple @michaelwhelan.bsky.social preliminaries at auction on Heritage that I'm following with the intention of writing about soon. 1/3

Could you please send the details of your interview request via email, either through the website contact form or to me at webmaster AT michaelwhelan DOT com? I'll make sure Michael sees it. Thanks.

No plans currently but Iโll be glad to mention it the next time we discuss new prints.
Happy we have officially announced this thing I've been working on for ten freakin' years. Expect to hear more from me about it over the next little while. Meanwhile, here are details:

Usually time to take down is 24-48 hours in my experience. I haven't had to deal with Apple Books before though.
That is wild! The description was clearly pulled from Piper's book.
It was painted for Michael's 2nd one-man show at Tree's Place in 1999 and wasn't collected in a book until Beyond Science Fiction in 2017. It's a hauntingly beautiful piece that blew me away when I first saw it in the gallery show.
Piper's catalog was largely forgotten after his death. Rights were complicated by the death of his agent before the author's suicide in 1964. Jerry Pournelle shepherded the books back to publication with Ace a decade later.

It's first person. There's a sample of the ebook and audio on Amazon. It is available on Audible.

We always recommend waiting until you have the prints in hand before buying ready made frames. When you measure you want to take into account mat window, margins, etc.
If you'd like to discuss in more detail, you can always email me at webmaster AT michaelwhelan DOT com. 2/2
Unfortunately the MST prints aren't a ready made frame size. I believe the paper width on DBC and SoF is 36 in. The art was abnormally long so the margins (paper outside of the image area) are larger than normal, approx 4 in. 1/2
The last Ace printing was 40 years ago so I'm guessing the book is out of print, but a used copy shouldn't be hard to track down.
Tantor released an audio edition in 2024 and there are a couple of ebooks listed 2011 (UK) and 2022 (US).

Note that the automod didn't flag this for nudity. Apparently stoic male cheeks bared to the wind don't count as adult content or even as sexually suggestive. ๐
Yep. You got me on the alt-text!
Yeah, it's been awhile since I posted a nude and forgot to apply the content warning. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ And Bluesky always labels it inaccurately. ๐
