โWildest thingโ: solar-powered slug steals chloroplasts and stores them for emergencies
Marine creatures house contraband structures in special organelles, which the animal raids for food in times of need.
Did you know that sea slugs steal chloroplasts from algae as portable snacks?! Neither did I, but a new Cell paper demonstrates that they do. ๐๐งช
My favorite part is the researchers called the storage for these stolen hors dโoeuvres โkleptosomesโ ๐๐ฅฐ

Scientists design gene delivery systems for cells in the brain and spinal cord
NIH-funded breakthrough could enable targeted therapies for many neurological disorders.
We've launched the Armamentarium, a new toolkit for targeted gene delivery to the brain and spinal cord.
This #OpenScience resource was made possible thanks to support from the NIH BRAIN Initiative and teamwork with our collaborators.

โToo many people take biomedical innovation for granted.โ
Below this is a screenshot from an article on the Atlantic.com. Highlighted is the text: โA child born with cystic fibrosis in the 50s could expect to live until age 5. In the 70s, age 10. In the early 2000s, age 35. With Trikafta came a quantum leap. Today those who begin taking the drug in early adolescence, a recent study projected, can expect to survive to age 82.5 - an essentially normal lifespan.โ
I remember the cystic fibrosis patients I took care of 20 years ago.
I also remember the dedicated HIV wards in the hospitals, and that Princess Diana made headlines for shaking hands with AIDS patients.
Progress has been incredible.
Miracles are where you choose to see them.

Someone awesome in my circle shared some terrific news with me today but was hesitant to do so because of all that is going on in the science world.
It may appear insensitive that you are celebrating when other colleagues are struggling but I entreat you to celebrate & share good news. 1/

Gene editing technology began by people studying salt marshes. Ozempic began by folks studying the venom of Gila Monsters. Support for basic science has empowered us to understand our world. Tethering it to applications health has transformed and saved countless lives.
