This site needs a break. Post 3 good things, none of which are the cessation of a negative.

1. Trust and appreciation from a teenager.

2. Trust and affection from a cat.

3. Beef and broccoli following the recipe from Kenji Lopez-Alt. You guys. Oh my god. You guys.

βœ‹ Former USG war crimes lawyer here.

Apropos of SecDef's remarks this morning:

Denial of quarterβ€”even the declaration of no quarterβ€”is a war crime.

And recognized as such by the US Government.

From DoD's Manual for Military Commissions.

Pete Hegseth will spend eternity asking himself why heaven is so hot

This is clearly directed at an audience of two specific people, but that doesn't make it any better. He's a monster whether he sincerely believes this or not. The damage is the same.

How do we get people like this out of leadership?

No, you guys, this makes perfect sense. Obviously the unarmed combat skill issue is holding the FBI back. I mean how many brawls did Mulder ever win on the X-Files?

The faster this year goes, the faster we can get to the other side of our current nonsense.

The flipside of that is that we're all getting older and probably missing out on good things on the way, and that really pisses me off.

The other lesson, of course, is that the US shouldn't be such a raging jackass bully. But again, here we are.

The screaming, neon-sign-obvious lesson of every geopolitical crisis in my lifetime is that we have to get off oil. Every single time. We have alternatives. They aren't perfect, but they don't have to be.

It's 2026 and here we are with another geopolitical crisis.

That this war with Iran is unpopular in a way never before recorded in American history has seen remarkably little attention from the press

Early in childhood, I learned the difference between confidence and bragging. I learned that the guy who talks loudest and proudest about being awesome is usually full of shit and shouldn't be trusted.

Then for the rest of my life I haven't understood how so many people don't get that at all.

This puts me at 10 people released. I filed my 1st habeas petition 29 days ago. I am an incredibly small-time, nobody lawyer who knew nothing about immigration law the day I submitted that case. I barely know any more today. I had never sued the federal government and now I've beaten them 10 times.

The cover of The Feywild Job by C. L. Polk

So I don't know what to say about this book. Ten years after Saeldian ditched Kell in Baldur's Gate, they're back together for one last job

Kell will get everything he ever wanted. Saeldian will lose everything they have except the power that keeps them safe--but it's the least they can do for him.

Strongly suspect that as this war and its negative effects escalate, we're gonna see a massive increase in disinfo and unsourced "news" - starting right the hell now.

PLEASE don't share "breaking" news from rando or disreputable accounts who provide no links.

key questions for journalists to ask: did the military consider any of the risks to human life or the environment when bombing an oil facility in/near a city of close to 10 million? if US did it, was it a result of hegseth's rejection of the law of war?

Reminder that Tehran has been dealing with such a drought and water shortage that they were talking about moving the capital before all this started.

So it turns out I'm currently in a Star Wars game that started on Startplaying. πŸ˜€ It's a GREAT site. Groups are a roll of the dice (pun accepted), but that's how con tables work, too.

The current Outgunned sessions there just don't work for my schedule. I check back irregularly.

The tragedy of ttrpgs is that if you really want to play any given game, you'll probably have to be the one to run it. This is doubly true for any game that isn't D&D.

Which is all to say I really want to play Outgunned! but sadly I may have to run it to do so. ☹️

Does that make a real difference? I served from '94-'98 and got the National Defense Medal while in basic because we were still technically in whatever undeclared-but-still-a-war thing we had with Iraq.

And yes, we all thought that was kind of embarrassing, but they said we had to wear it.

Hegseth needs to stand trial after this as a war criminal. Between this attack and the girls' school, there's no ambiguity. He is responsible for mass murder and must be held accountable.

That doesn't sound like any kind of a serious plan. Funny how that's exactly how this whole mess kicked off in the first place.

Hi, I taught public school for 12+ years.
Teaching hungry students is hell. It's awful for the students, too. It sucks for both sides of that relationship.
And oh yeah letting kids go hungry is cruel.

"Do you support free meals for students?" is a real basic moral litmus test.
