Burlesque performers & scientists
Lost my voice tonight at the astronomy-themed burlesque show. Each performance was paired with actual scientific research! Yes it was me screaming “woooo brown dwarfs!” during a quiet moment, that’s what I studied for my PhD so it’s cool lol.
Wow! What a wonderful thing! The world needs more. More scientific research presented artistically, please!
You know what, the world is too negative, to spread some love, when I’m out and I see a ‘how am I driving’ sticker on the back of a van, I’ll call it and tell them that they’re driving like a Boss.
I know someone who's been asking to see the manager, then telling the manager how such-and-such employee is doing a great job. It's a little thing, to be sure, but when these little things start adding up, that's what's going to change the world for the better.
Oh, I get it now! Sorry. Still, it's really fascinating to me how everybody's eyes saw slightly different things that day.

The people I was with said they saw red. Even after I showed them my drawing, they insisted they saw red, not magenta. It's really interesting that different people saw different colors. There must be something about different people's retinas, or something, causing us all to see different colors.
Yes and yes. And the day after the eclipse, I drew it from memory in colored pencil, before my memory could be influenced by any photos. Ended up making the solar prominences way bigger than the really were. They just seemed so much bigger than I expected, so that's how I remembered them.
Personally, in these unsettling times, I think we need art more than ever. Keep putting some beauty back into the world!
Meanwhile, there's a comet volcanically erupting in space. Apparently it's caused by chemical reactions inside the comet, not internal heat, which kind of reminds me of those foam volcanoes kids make in school.

I'm really surprised to learn that Hubble and JWST cost about the same amount of money (making JWST much cheaper after adjusting for inflation). I was somehow under the impression that JWST cost way, way more.
I love Betelgeuse, and I love that Betelgeuse is now known to have a little binary companion star, which astronomers have (very aptly) named Siwarha.

My doctor's office asked if I wanted a flu shot, and I said yes (of course), and they were super happy and excited that somebody actually said yes to that question. Made me wonder how many people must be saying no right now.
I have some well-meaning friends who always ask if I'm excited about the Wolf Moon, or the Strawberry Moon, or the Banana Slug Moon, or whatever other weird moon names are in the news. I try to be polite, because these are my friends, but it's still frustrating every time.
One of the cool things about astro/planetary stuff is that everything is astro/planetary stuff when you think about it. That bird lives on a planet, which exists in space... boom! That bird's astro/planetary, too!

Detecting life on a planet—even a planet teeming with life, like Earth—is more of a challenge than you might realize.

CO2 ice crystals!?! That's amazing! I knew Mars was cold, but I didn't realize it was cold enough for dry ice to form in the atmosphere.
I also feel that. For some people, though, being tiny in a vast universe may feel confusing or frightening. Their loss.
I thought V was absolutely awesome when I first saw it, but there were some things about the plot that seemed a little farfetched. Would the people of Earth really give in that easily? Doesn't seem so farfetched anymore.
