Remembering the Forgotten Movies of the 2026 Oscar Season A salute to the urgent documentaries, quiet dramas and provocative filmmakers who were ignored by Academy voters.

The Oscars are Sunday. For @ebertvoices.bsky.social, I paid tribute to 10 great movies from 2025 whose names we won't hear once during the show. Which is a shame.

A far more entertaining journey than sitting through BOAN itself, if you ask me

Ugh, really sorry to hear this, Matt. Wishing you the best on your next endeavors, and will continue to follow your work, wherever you may land!

Like…I can think of quite a few tech companies that would earn a shit ton of good will if they helped fund a major transportation system, but that’s never gonna happen!

As far as I know, quite a few billionaires and tech companies still exist in the bay, and yet the underfunded BART is under threat of shutting down a bunch of stations within the next few years. So…I’m not really sure their presence matters all that much to the average person.

I noticed that too. The bachelorettes always just look like insta-ready sleepovers for grown women. The men at least get to do real activities, even if those activities are also pretty mid.

One would think that 10 seasons in, Netflix would've upped the budget by now for these LOVE IS BLIND bachelor/bachelorette parties. Looks hella basic and depressing; I do not believe that they are actually enjoying themselves!

I will give him some credit: He had good strategy. But also, and especially: literally everyone but maybe two people wanted to jump his bones

Maura represents the last 10 years of American politics; no I will not explain myself further

This is one of the best movies I saw last year, and will very likely be one of the best movies released this year.

Why American Girl’s First Black Doll Had to Be Born a Slave In February, the American Girl brand, beloved for its expansive (and expensive) line of books, toys, and clothing, made an announcement: A new doll in...

Will shamelessly use this bit of weird-ass news to re-up a reported feature I did a decade ago about how a committee of black scholars advised o the creation of Addy. The look and texture of her hair was definitely carefully considered:

Yeah, that's certainly part of it -- to some extent, you have to pay to play. But then there are so many other factors, especially rank-choice voting, which also need to be considered when talking about the outcomes.

If you have genuinely managed to avoid the various DISCOURSESℒ️re: the nominees this year -- I'm legit happy for you!

23.02.2026 18:58 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

There are just so many factors to consider. On top of everything else (biases, etc.), it was a genuinely strong year for movies, and while I would love the three SINNERS stars to win their categories, some other nominated performances were great too in different ways (Hawke, Moura, and Fanning esp.)

23.02.2026 18:56 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Whatever happens, SINNERS (and probably a handful of other Oscar-nominated movies this year, like THE SECRET AGENT) will stand the test of time.
