Since one of Trump-aligned/Netanyahu stan U.S. mega-billionaire Larry Ellison’s Oracle subsidiaries is already getting $365 million from Nova Scotia for its digital health records system, you’d think he could have let us have the sailboat race he co-founded as a freebie.

CBC did a story on this in 2022 (for folks who think the company gets a tax credit, they don’t).
TL;DR: one expert says cheap way to raise money, helps company look good (I’d argue it doesn’t). Another expert says give directly or at least fully research the charity first www.cbc.ca/radio/costof...

A community group I belong to has a website hosted on Wix but on renewal the price will go from US$276 to US$378. Can anyone recommend a cheaper option? Preferably Canadian.

Globe editorial: A grotesque cloak of silence in Nova Scotia Province’s new law would require ministerial consent to identify children who died in the care of the child protection system – even for parents

It’s not paywalled. β€œA law that silences the family of a dead child is an unjustice law.”

I was reading a post from a N.S. politician that had that odd AI feel to it - overly general, prose like a dime-store paperback, clipped sentences - so I ran it through an AI detector, and bingo. Did a few more posts & seems he uses AI a lot. Not naming in case I’m wrong - but yuck and be wary.

Fine in informal venues such as social media, cringe where β€œgood” writing still should matter (such as the body of a news story). I think spelling it out would have slightly better SEO value, if that matters.

Preamble to Nova Scotia’s Windsor is the Birthplace of Hockey Bill, a thin gruel of evidence at best:

WHEREAS Nova Scotian historians have claimed that Nova Scotia is the birthplace of modern Canadian ice hockey, based, in part, upon descriptions of the playing of "hurley on the ice" in Windsor, Nova Scotia, no later than 1810;

AND WHEREAS early paintings show shinny, an early form of hockey, being played in Nova Scotia;

AND WHEREAS an anonymous writer in the Windsor Mail of 1876 wrote of the playing of hurley on the Devil's Punch Bowl and on Long Pond during his school days from 1816 to 1818 in Windsor;

AND WHEREAS during the mid-1850s hockey games were played by British soldiers stationed in Halifax;

AND WHEREAS J. G. A. Creighton (1850-1930) of Halifax is credited with introducing hockey to Montreal, for the first time under organized rules, with Halifax rules in 1875;

AND WHEREAS Howard Dill gathered a tremendous collection of hockey memorabilia and promoted Long Pond as the "Cradle of Hockey in Canada";

AND WHEREAS Dr Garth Vaughan, in his book The Puck Starts Here, chronicled the origins of hockey in Windsor;

The cited β€œevidence” for the Birthplace of Hockey claim includes an anonymous letter to the editor and the fact that Howard Dill had a big collection of hockey memorabilia. While there are many things to care about more, this bill still should die. Good G&M article: web.archive.org/web/20210220...

Apparently HRM is so excited that they forgot to tell us how much this deal is for. Like Halifax’s Metro Centre and the Halifax Oval, the Canada Games Centre - to me - will never be known by its shitty corporate name.

Two paragraphs from the New York Times morning newsletter that read:
β€œThe Epstein files are a lot, and that’s before we get to Trump’s appearances in them. They present such a sprawling, sordid, sometimes inchoate scandal that it can be difficult to understand exactly what they tell us, except that the guy had a lot of powerful friends.

He used them for various reasons, and they used him for their own. Some of it was illegal. Some of it was ick. Some of it was quotidian (my name appears a few times because Epstein subscribed to various Times newsletters). And this week it’s all people want to talk about.”

This actually appears in @nytimes.com morning newsletter: Heinous crimes against young girls referenced as β€œick” and apparently the Epstein files are so large and sprawling that β€œit can be difficult to understand exactly what they tell us, except that (Epstein) had a lot of powerful friends.” 1/2
