π Are domestic war crimes trials biased? We use Text as Data methods, using LIWC to look at judicial decisions from Serbia (1999β2019). We find conflict actor biasβparamilitary crimes are described in longer, more graphic detail, while state actors' crimes receive shorter, more neutral accounts.
NEW ARTICLE: Analysing the verdicts and the texts of judgements, we find that the state shifts responsibility away from state forces to paramilitaries in Serbian war crimes trials, with Ivor Sokolic @lanabi.bsky.social @sanjavico.bsky.social @ercresearch.bsky.social

How do people form their national identity? Is it an abstract sense of belonging to an imagined community? Or is it more dynamic than that - something rooted in interpersonal communication? @sanjavico.bsky.social @exeter.ac.uk explores this dynamic in her new book.
news.exeter.ac.uk/faculty-of-h...
It is based on 18-month-long ethnographic research (incl. traditional & digital ethnography) & 40 in-depth interviews with Serbian Londoners.
I develop a theory of national identity and concept of 'doing nation' to argue that a nation comes into being and is sustained through (mediated) everyday interpersonal communication practices & thus represents embodied cultural and discursive practices.
Delighted my monograph 'Doing Nation' in a Digital Age is available for pre-order with Routledge. π«
