And that’s different from having it supposedly “do research.”
And then there’s using it as an interlocutor for brainstorming which is different still.
It felt like magic. It has specific shortcomings but it has beneficial uses.
That said, I’m against students using it primarily because I think they don’t yet have the relevant skills and using AI almost always undercuts developing those skills.

Yeah I think it’s really a mixed bag. I hate to come off as “enlightened centrist” but I do find the hype ridiculous/wrong (including the QT’d guy’s original substack post), but the bsky attitude overly dismissive. When ChatGPT was first released it was the biggest public leap in AI I’d ever seen.

It’s important we don’t anthropomorphize AI when we talk about responsibility for atrocities.
AI is not responsible for these things because it’s not the kind of thing that can bear responsibility. It is always *people*—those who design and use it in these ways—who are responsible.
