Today I took my @ucberkeleyofficial.bsky.social optometry students on a field trip (actually, just outside our building) to observe polarization in the wild. Bottom line? Are polarizing sunglasses π worth it? I think these future optometrists would say YES.

Every respectable vision scientist has to use a bite bar at least once in their career (Marty Banks' words, not mine). I take that advice very seriously.

Indulging in some actual building today. This will ultimately be a system for splitting broadband, supercontinuum light into 5 separate spectral channels. But for today, it's just lego blocks for scientists!

I found that papers with the -NC (non-commercial) condition was a barrier if anyone ever wanted to reproduce a figure in a review paper for a for-profit publisher (eg Elsevier). I default to the CC BY which is least restrictive. (and I will never write another review for a for-profit journal)

Exploring how neural circuits of the retina encode visual information for the human brain.
My boss/mentor Teresa Puthussery won a MacArthur genius grant today! She shares the award with Oakland novelist Tommy Orange (read There There! It's awesome!), resource recovery chemist William Tarpeh, and 22 others. Congratulations Teresa! www.macfound.org/fellows/clas...

Most #visionscience folks know that stabilized retinal images fade. Fewer know that stabilized, but flickering, images also fade. Even fewer know that the flicker-fading doesn't take place in the retina.

Another earthquake shakes Bay Area with epicenter near UC Berkeley
The quake with an epicenter in Berkeley struck at about 2:55 a.m.
Seems that a small earthquake knocked our #AOSLO #AOOCT system out of alignment. It may be time to engage to the air suspension.... One of the perils of doing research at #ucberkeley.

UC Berkeley student will compete in World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship in Spain
The World Jigsaw Puzzle Championship will be held in Spain this month, and one UC Berkeley grad student is hoping to bring home the win.
Hannah works hard every on her PhD, doing very cool #visionscience every day in my lab at #UCBerkeley. But does she go home and put up her feet every night? Nope! She is speed-puzzling phenom, heading to the world championship later this month. Go Hannah!
