I can't find it today, but I once played a jam-winning infinite runner game starring a cowboy on a horse. As you progress, you hit stuff and the guy falls off but the horse continues. You realize you are the horse, not the guy. You can collect new guys to act as extra lives and powerups.

Part of it is just that graphics tech is a lot easier to compare than design and style. This resolution number is lower, this industry standard feature is missing. That's a lot easier to point out and rally against than Art.
Yeah, gameplay trumps graphics. But also, it's a company making a billion dollars a year iterating on the same game over and over. For any franchise in a similar position, the graphical polish level has gotten very high.

Most extreme example for me was struggling with the Metroid Prime Pinball boss for a solid week then quitting it for a month and coming back to beat it first try. I think the break lets your brain break bad habits. Lets your logic brain take over where the desire/frustration loop was drowning it out

The island is sinking though and you gotta use various mysterious mechanisms to stop it. These eventually reveal the island to be a giant moving vessel, capable of navigating between continents. The continents are also sinking and boy are you not gonna believe what this planet is capable of doing.
I think the Anno series gives it a run for its money on that one.
