Elk in Cherokee, NC yesterday via video Jack Mayo. In 2001-2002, the National Park Service reintroduced 52 elk into the Cataloochee area of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park as part of an experimental project. Recent studies estimate the herd is now close to 240 in Western North Carolina.
