We believe accountability is necessary, but the death penalty is not. We hope the state will choose mercy and stop this execution, and we hope the loved ones of Cedric's victims — Roxann Sanchez and her 8-year-old son Anthony — can find solace and peace.

Gov. Ivey: “I believe it would be unjust for one participant in this crime to be executed while the participant who pulled the trigger was not.”

Ivey has only commuted one other sentence in her tenure. We are grateful that she chose mercy today; as a result, one less life will be taken this week.
