UT System Board of Regents was like, "thanks for the 5 month notice, Hartzell, but time to go..."

To be clear: I'm not saying Ruiz's writing is unintelligible or that her analysis falls short. I'm just saying that *I'm* finding it challenging to read
I want to be patient w/myself, but I'm struggling to understnd this text & its spinning me out. 50 pgs in & all I (think) I understand is that death is one of few material things the colonial subject owns, so the death drive can be understood as an agentic form of resistance?

Today I gave a mini-talk in class, sharing an assemblage of thoughts I've been working through re: time, sobriety, memory. I got such gracious and caring engagement, questions, feedback and it really made me grateful to be sharing space with such generous peers #phdjourney #soberscholar
Hold on....the way I've been gaslit into being told I over-think things, when really, I'm just being a self-reflexive ethnographic researcher of life....

The myth of "American excellence" has always been a sham...Trump'executive orders continue the embarrassment
The NACCS conference schedule is out and I'm getting hyped as fuck to go and be in community with my people!!!

Today, and for the next four years:
Fuck Trump.

Anyway, the tiktok "shutdown" was the biggest peice of political theater I've seen in awhile
R.I.P. tiktok
Important point I failed to make in the video: Wynter argues that in our current day, it is race (and to some extent economic status) that has become the organizing structure of what it means to be Man--what it means to be selected/dysselected as belonging to the category of human
Today, I'm sharing some brief thoughts on Sylvia Wynter's "Unsettling the Coloniality of Being/Power/Truth/Freedom: Towards the Human, After Man, It's Overrepresentation--An Argument".

NACCS is my academic home. So grateful for the opportunity to present again this year. And to keep talking about joto shit in academic spaces ππ½

Shout out to Podcasters and Qual researchers who do interviews...because how the hell has it taken me over 3 hours to edit/correct this 1 hour interview transcript?! (This doesn't even include actually editing the audio file down...!)
Every now and then I read something that makes me think, "I can't wait to teach this some day..." Today, it's the essay "The Historian as Curandera" in the book Medicine Stories: Essays for Radicals, by Aurora Levins Morales.
Whatever the platform, I will ALWAYS take the opportunity to hype up the work of Gloria AnzaldΓΊa, JosΓ© Esteban MuΓ±oz, @radiorodriguez.bsky.social, Michael Hames-Garcia, and @rtrodrig.bsky.social.

I've been made aware that my writing at times lacks strong authorial claim. More of "here are some things I want you to think abt w/ me" than a "here's the thing I'm claiming concretely."
And, that's kind of my whole vibe. But maybe not the vibe of this Ph.D thing?
#phdjourney
And with that last final submitted, I'm officially done with my first semester of my Ph.D program.
This semester was kind of a slay.

Having a potluck on the last day of class is something I didn't realize I'd miss from my Master's experience. CCS faculty at San JosΓ© State University really do practice a pedagogy of care and community ππ½ππ½ππ½
Yes! I'm taking a Storytelling as Rhetorical Criticism course and Dr. Jo Hsu incorporated peer workshops in two class sessions. It's been so wonderful to learn about my peers' work and think alongside them!
I don't romanticize *ANY* part of academia.
But, NACCS is my academic home, & I've built beautiful community through my involvement the past few years.
I'm so grateful to be a part of two panel proposal submissions this year.
The work of submitting is done; now we wait.
Exactly! Like, it's soooo generative (and a tremendous form of community-building) to think our writing out *with* others
Dear grad school faculty: please incorporate writing workshops into your syllabi.
Being able to hear the brilliance of peers is soooo fucking amazing. ππ½ππ½ππ½

I need to write a paper for my methods class, considering which methods I might want to use in my research. And, tbh, I've kinda been word vomiting every thought on this document all afternoon and it's fucking exciting.
Like, oh yeah, I remember why I applied for grad school.
