Here's a striking visual illusion - the 9 purple dots.

Focus your eyes on the top left dot. That one is more purple than the others, right? Now try another dot... that one becomes the purple one! pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41744429/

Ghosts feature film officially confirmed as cast and crew unveiled in huge production update Button House is reopening its doors as the BBC comedy favourite Ghosts returns in a big-screen adventure featuring the original cast.

I should be in this film.
I can be the human who annoys the ghosts by always asking questions about tiny details about daily life before they died.

Oh no - I’m so so sad to hear this. I found her (and indeed the whole VGCC field) to be so welcoming when I started research in that area. A brilliant mind and a wonderful woman 😒

a dragon with fire coming out of it 's mouth Alt: A dragon with fire coming out of it’s mouth. We all have fire in our lungs right now from the capsaicin fumes. Turns out you can desensitise all your gastrointestinal TRPV receptors but the ones in the lungs remain unaffected by simple chili consumption.

Experiments in chili sauce making:

I thought I’d combine charred Scotch Bonnets with sofrito & blood orange juice as a sauce base. So far, this has led to large scale evacuation of anywhere vaguely near the kitchen in my apartment and all windows open in -7 degree temperatures. On the bright side…

This is a very impressive list (which I seriously covet). I’ve not seen anywhere near this many shows, but The Glass Menagerie @theyardtheatre.bsky.social blew my mind and broke my heart. I can’t wait to see what this extraordinary venue does next ❀️ www.theyardtheatre.co.uk/events/the-g...

The neuroscience laboratory is closed for the holidays, but a staff member is on hand to answer the Consciousness Hotline.

Scientist on the phone in an otherwise deserted office:
"So, to summarise: No, I can't say with complete certainty that you exist. But yes, you probably ought to go back to work after the holidays anyway."

Two Years to 1.7Β°C: the β€œPrediction Game” We Can’t Afford to Lose Australia’s sweltering through another early-summer heatwave, and I’m trying to decide whether to write about the weather outside my window - or the bigger climate system we’re reengineering on this p...

This week, Professor James Hansen and colleagues published projections that the global temperature record could reach +1.7Β°C by 2027.
And if that number lands in your gut the way it landed in mine, good. It should.

I may well not have found this by myself but it is *brilliant*. I am going to have serious book grief when I finish it

I agree.

For me, at first, Academia was very much an identity and a calling.

Years later, after some experience of terrible university management, it is "a job".

Some other reflections (which turned out to be about workload management, and ways of working)
