We’re 3 days in, John. Do you have any view on this? Or are you not prepared to express your view? Recordings are readily available.

Perhaps did more than anyone else to enable upward mobility in UK society. We’ve regressed since then.

@johnswinney.bsky.social I dropped you this note pre-kick off yesterday, John. In the light of what followed it post-match it has yet more resonance. Will you call out that appalling display of racist and sectarian community singing by the home fans at yesterday’s game?

@johnswinney.bsky.social

Will you call out that appalling display of anti-Catholic sectarianism by the overwhelming majority of Rangers fans at Ibrox today?

Translation: “All the best, Milos. I’m off to the ‘tic”.

Clever (if toxic) use of semantics (see “heimat”). Not “responsible” for illiberalism but part of a wider motif (flags, veneration of military, othering of outsiders…) that collectively gave permission for latent xenophobia to be openly expressed. Acute phase post-9/11. Policy realisation in MAGA.

Bread and circuses. Probably work for a while.

Brilliant. One of my favourite music clips. 5 octave range. A huge talent. So incongruous on The Monkees.

Amazing. Haven’t heard this before.

It’s all Euskara to me.

This some obscure Basque allusion?

Once we had Wilson, Benn, Castle, Healey, Crosland, Foot, Shore, Smith, Brown, Cook. Even Jenkins and Williams pre-SDP. Now…

The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead is a must-read if you ascribe arcane meaning to lifts.

Also lends her name to the main railway station in Lisbon.

Streeting is simply not credible as a PM. In any GE campaign he would be revealed as the lightweight he is. Of course, only in a closed system (Westminster) can he even be considered as viable. The challenge for commentators is to step outside that system.

That’s great. The Bowie German version is wonderful. His kosmische musik phase.

With a dash of Pseuds Corner!

I think you’re perhaps confusing justification with explanation/education, Ann.

There is a significant Unionist and Loyalist tradition in Scotland. Historically (principally anti-Irish) racist. R/wing politically. Vehemently anti-independence. Declining demographic but 20% seems credible; may even be a little more. Fertile for Reform.

Much underrated as a PM. Had a realistic view of UK in a post-war/empire context. Instinctively tried to pivot towards modernising the UK economy. Had the measure of the Tories and the right generally. Not a natural part of the metro bubble. Distrusted, of course, by clubbable London.

Lovely spot too. What’s the source of the problem?

Great song, well chosen. Kosmische Musik in its peak years. Too many genuinely great bands to list. Personally, still waiting for the return to Glasgow of Michael Rother and have Kraftwerk tickets for the middle of the year.

Precisely. And can a glib and shameless liar change his position?

I could use the Glaswegian vernacular…

Rhetorical question.

Not any obvious palatable courses available. Seems like the rational path to pursue for the moment.

Laziness on my part. Thanks for the correction - should have known better!

People like David are priceless, but quietly so. They do however give us hope for our better natures to succeed.

Suddenly the foreign policy posture of the Elysee over the last 70 years begins to make sense.
