Get photographic paper - it's more like the heavy paper/ card that magazines are printed with and the colours will look lovely. A little tip I picked up from @okumarts.bsky.social for his paper miniatures.

I also liked the ones you filled with water and then air pumped for like 20 mins so when you pulled the release switch all the water was the rocket propellant and they'd go so high.
I'm pretty sure this is the one you mean, too, @benaaronovitch.bsky.social -- there's also a great sequence involving a masquerade party somewhere in there where a guy dressed as a pirate meets an unfortunate end.

AFTER BLUE (PARADIS SALE) was my introduction to the works of Bertrand Mandico. His bold, theatrical style has been a huge influence on the look of FAIRY DUST. I love how dream-like his imagery feels.
