The reliance of the Irish Higher Education sector on poorly paid, highly qualified staff has been & continues to be a scandal—as well as an enormous waste of potential. Whatever short-term benefits accrue from this system of precarity, the long-term damage is huge. www.irishtimes.com/ireland/educ...

Poem by Irish poet Leo Cullen in memory of Ann Lovett, a 15 year old child who died alone giving birth to her son in 1984. Annunciation To the memory of Ann Lovett died January 31st 1984 You saw the bumble bee in the garden and you said, look, a bumble bee in the cup of the flower, and your eyes and ears and throat were abuzz with the world. You saw the robin, he hopped over to where you sat in the sun and you said, look, a robin, he’s watching me, and he pecked a tattoo into the earth like he was pecking holes into the tapestry of your cloak. You saw leaf-gum you’d chewed and taken from your mouth and placed on the carpenter’s seat and it congealed and wouldn’t come off so that you studied the wood and grain with unusual care and you said, look, it will become part of the seat. All these things you were seeing in the garden and you didn’t envisage a time not far off when you would birth a baby, whose arms would never outstretch in pleading: mama, give me. And that his year would never come when you would tell him to make his bed so that he would say, why do I have to make my bed, and so you would answer, because you have to lie in it and because I love you. Even if that day in the garden when the light poured down its announcement upon your pale face your heart was already tilting toward these new kinds of things: Look – the stars, the cold, the Blue Lady, the gasp of night, the touch, the pain. And you bled with the love. You, first to reveal to us our Lost. museumofchildhood.ie

‘When We Were Kings and Queens of the Road’*, islandwide and diaspora story project from the Museum of Childhood Ireland, explores the various ways in which children travelled to school in the past when there was less reliance on cars as a means of transport, where children walked, cycled bikes, used buses….generally unsupervised! As such we gain a novel insight on their remembrances of how they navigated their world. Sepia toned image of a boy on a piebald pony in an Irish town We hope you’ll enjoy reading the stories and we’d love to hear your story too! ❤️ https://museumofchildhood.ie/when-we-were-kings-and-queens-of-the-road/ *Our project title is inspired by Patrick Kavanagh‘s poem, Inniskeen Road: July Evening The bicycles go by in twos and threes – There’s a dance in Billy Brennan’s barn to-night, And there’s the half-talk code of mysteries And the wink-and-elbow language of delight. Half-past eight and there is not a spot Upon a mile of road, no shadow thrown That might turn out a man or woman, not A footfall tapping secrecies of stone. I have what every poet hates in spite Of all the solemn talk of contemplation. Oh, Alexander Selkirk knew the plight Of being king and government and nation. A road, a mile of kingdom, I am king Of banks and stones and every blooming thing.
Islandwide/diaspora project explores how children travelled to school in the past….generally unsupervised! Their Insightful remembrances on navigating their world.
Enjoy! love to hear your story too❤️
