Annunciation To the memory of Ann Lovett died January 31st 1984 You saw the bumble bee in the garden and you said, look, a bumble bee in the cup of the flower, and your eyes and ears and throat were abuzz with the world. You saw the robin, he hopped over to where you sat in the sun and you said, look, a robin, he’s watching me, and he pecked a tattoo into the earth like he was pecking holes into the tapestry of your cloak. You saw leaf-gum you’d chewed and taken from your mouth and placed on the carpenter’s seat and it congealed and wouldn’t come off so that you studied the wood and grain with unusual care and you said, look, it will become part of the seat. All these things you were seeing in the garden and you didn’t envisage a time not far off when you would birth a baby, whose arms would never outstretch in pleading: mama, give me. And that his year would never come when you would tell him to make his bed so that he would say, why do I have to make my bed, and so you would answer, because you have to lie in it and because I love you. Even if that day in the garden when the light poured down its announcement upon your pale face your heart was already tilting toward these new kinds of things: Look – the stars, the cold, the Blue Lady, the gasp of night, the touch, the pain. ‘When We Were Kings and Queens of the Road’*, islandwide and diaspora story project from the Museum of Childhood Ireland, explores the various ways in which children travelled to school in the past when there was less reliance on cars as a means of transport, where children walked, cycled bikes, used buses….generally unsupervised! As such we gain a novel insight on their remembrances of how they navigated their world. Were you a big fan of Playmobil? 1970s, 80s, 90s? Invented by Hans Beck, the ‘Father of Playmobil’, playmobil is a line of toys produced in Germany, since 1974. Playmobil toys are produced in themed series of sets as well as individual special figures and playsets. Activities extend beyond collecting and free-form play to include customisation, miniature wargaming and the creation of photo stories and stop motion films. Mick Kehoe’s Playmobil Figures Collection form part of a large collection of Playmobil figures, playsets and related childhood stories, currently being photographed and researched by Lauren Kavanagh at the Museum of Childhood Ireland.
