I am not entirely sure. I know he wrote almost exclusively with a fountain pen, but I could see him having a ballpoint pen for when he was out. He had a stationary store in Germany very much focussed on high end quality. So these pens might even be older.

At Penfest in Germany this couple stole several high value collectors fountain pens. The reel shows the incident.
