Tommy M. McGuire (Not that one. Nor that one.) Coding bum, tetrapod. (he/him) Bitterly cynical misanthrope. It's always more complicated. I apologize in advance; I tend to get too comfortable. Called 'weird' by Kevin Kruse.

I'm here watching Irish music on PBS and it's clear we have different ideas of Irish music.

Bob Dylan and ye olde traditional Irish rather than the Pogues. Hmph. No Turkish Song of the Damned.

🧡Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:

In a cafe: A woman (80s?) is gifted a pretty tea towel with teapots, cups and saucers on it.
Laughing, she ties it on her head like a makeshift bandana, asking her friends: "Anyone want to be in my tea gang?" (1)

An Edward Gorey drawing showing a morose looking black bird on a branch. He (and this feels very much like a he) is pointing downwards with one scraggly wing, and looking straight ahead with debt-filled eyes. His beak is long and sharp, like winter on the Great Plains. He is pointing with his right wing, but this means he is pointing to your left. Your wicked, sinister side. This is no accident. The Bird makes no such mistakes. But he is talking, and the text tells us that he is saying, "Beware of this and that."

Honestly, you feel his message in your bones.

Some days I just feel like this Edward Gorey bird gets it.

For an upcoming story, I'd like to hear from people who have had an encounter with a stranger recording them on Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses. If that's you or you can pass along this request to someone else who has experienced this, I'm at miles_klee@wired.com or millionbear.44 on Signal. Thanks!

I just remember when the roof of Notre-Dame de Paris was on fire and how every Western leader became a cultural expert and lamented the damage and how everyone donated money to rebuild it.

I am having a hard time finding a single article in any European or American publication about this.

Some of the people like this seem to have deeper problems, like not understanding that other people are people just like them. Sort of a lack of a theory of mind.

Like not understanding Columbo because the viewer knows who is guilty, so why doesn't the detective?

We don't talk enough about the risks of geomagnetic storms.

Earlier this year, an Aussie power company said that some of their network might have been knocked out by the Jan solar storm.

So I chatted to our leading space weather scientists about the origin and risk mitigation of these events.

TITLE Anatomy of Monsters: Anatomy of a Chupacabra

Description: A four-legged creature with brown skin the fades to light back legs with dark stripes. His bat-like face has bulging eyes, small teeth protruding from his cringing mouth, and pointing ears hald back on his head. His shoulder blades and hip bones poke out, spikes along his back and tail stick out. He holds one hand up and stands on a sandy, pebble ground.

Jokes:
- First sighted in Puerto Rico in 1995! (Mainly because that’s when the island’s wi-fi finally got strong enough to upload blurry photos.)
- Genetic makeup: 30% Feral Dog, 20% Gargoyle, 50% expired gas station beef jerky
- His teeth are arranged like a junk drawer: nothing matches, and everything is sharp.
- His skin is β€œsun kissed”. If the sun was a blowtorch.
- These shoulder blades could double as bottle openers.
- The posture of a pro-gamer who’s never seen a chair with lumbar support.
- His β€œblue-sih glow” isn’t bioluminescence: it’s a recently consumed double-tall Jamba Juice.
- He gives off the energy of a guy who owns four different leather jackets, but no shirts.

Elizabeth Gaskell: 1851 portrait by George Richmond.

A chalk portrait drawing of a Gaskell, shown from the chest up against a plain light background. She has dark hair parted centrally and drawn back smoothly, with loose strands falling at the sides. Her features are delicate and her expression gentle and slightly smiling. She wears a light dress with a dark brooch or bow at the neckline.

Your methodology doesn't have to be revolutionary - it just has to be right for your research question. Solid execution beats flashy innovation.

From there, the fire seems- again, judging from what I can piece together from social media footage- to follow the natural progression of β€œold ass building with draughts and hidden cavities and Victorian construction standards catches fire”. It’s sad, but also just how those buildings burn.
