DOGE staffers uncritically used AI to flag and cancel NEH-funded humanities research ID'd as "DEI". Some grants may have been flagged because they included the word "critical" (as in "critical edition") or because they provided "equitable" access to heritage objects. Outrageous and appalling.😠

Coin used as Leeds bus fare was 2,000‑year‑old currency The coin was handed down to Peter Edwards from his grandfather in the 1950s.

This is the sort of thing a cashless society robs us of, the opportunity to try to get away with paying the bus fare in Carthaginian currency www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Seeing ppl circulate projects whose NEH grants were canceled by DOGE reaffirms my argument about AI as a permission structure. Some grants were canceled w/o a β€œno” from the generated summary. DOGE had a mandate to slash humanities funding & AI gave them the veneer of a rationale for their actions.

For most of my childhood my mom was a researcher at Entertainment Weekly and worked in their massive library of other magazines reporters were constantly referencing. We lose so much when reporters, or anyone else, can't access that history.
